Around Town: NIVA’s Call to Action
The National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) recently wrote to Congress to press for federal financial relief for music venues, which were “the first to close” and likely “the last to reopen” among businesses shuttered during the national pandemic.
NIVA is further urging individuals to take action and send a video or letter to their members of congress.

Layering synths, guitars, electronic percussion, and live drums, Houses of Heaven fuses early industrial and techno rhythms with the melodicism of shoegaze and a heavy dose of dub-influenced effects. Formed in Oakland, California, by Keven Tecon, Adam Beck, and Nick Ott, the band follows up the Remnant EP with their first full-length album titled Silent Places, available May 1 via Felte.
Today, the band released a video for “Dissolve the Floor” from that debut album.

Around Town: DC9 Open for Takeout

Hey folks, DC9 asked the mayor if it could resume business with takeout and delivery of food and alcohol. And the mayor approved!
DC9 had been closed since the DC mayor’s March 13 order to close nightclubs. Other establishments that hold liquor licenses, such as taverns, were able to pivot to takeout food, but DC9 initially was not.
The mayor allowed DC9 to reopen beginning April 22, and now the club’s burgers and Southern-leaning plates are available for online and in-person ordering!

Ariana and the Rose has solidified herself as both an underground Brooklyn nightlife staple and a must-see mainstay on the NYC pop scene. She was to visit DC with Torres, but the show was canceled (for now) due to the national coronavirus emergency.

Interview: Scott Terry (of Red Wanting Blue)

Scott Terry is a road warrior. Red Wanting Blue, the Columbus, Ohio-based band he founded in 1996 while a student at Ohio University, has spent the better part of two-plus decades on what seems like a perpetual tour.
Comprised of Eric Hall on lead guitar, Dean Anshutz on drums and percussion, Greg Rahm on keys and guitar, Mark McCullough on bass, and Scott on lead vocals and ukulele, Red Wanting Blue regularly plays 200 or more live shows a year.
With no touring scheduled due to the national coronavirus emergency, Scott chatted with Parklife DC’s Ari Strauss from Brooklyn about his thoughts and activities during the lockdown.

Like a blanket offered to a shivering stranger, “Even This Is Going to Pass,” by Eliot Bronson and featuring Lori McKenna, is a welcome and warm refrain in these tough times. The song which was just released as a single is helping to raise money for Feeding America, the largest domestic hunger relief organization in the United States.
