Live Review: Wale @ The Fillmore Silver Spring — 10/9/19

“Woooow… That’s Craaaaazy” was the phrase I repeated over and over to myself, as the night built for the anxiously awaited return home for DC’s prolific son Wale! This was what it’s supposed to feel like when you’re a hometown hero. The Fillmore Silver Spring was supposed to have a line wrapped around the block. You’re supposed to bring out the homies Q Da Fool & Young Chris. What would normally amount to a ton of pressure, didn’t phase Wale. He just feels the strength: He loves his city and it loves him.

As soon as I walked into the 9:30 Club, I knew that it was going to be a good night. The crowd was living for Kari Faux (opening DJ) and it was a sold-out show. She warmed up the crowd to an incredible night for Steve Lacy and his fans.

Sleepy Creek HarFest: The Place Where We Belong

Each time I go to Sleepy Creek, it feels like coming home. Although I attend a few bigger festivals each year featuring the bleeps, bloops, and synth-knob twiddling of Jamtronica I love so much, Sleepy Creek owns my heart. It’s like that favorite worn in pair of jeans that fit just right or a pair of super comfy pajama pants perfect for lounging at home. Just as importantly, the truly wonderful people who run, staff, and attend Sleepy Creek Presents events create the perfect environment for family, fun, creativity, connection, enjoyment of musical artistry as diverse as the American landscape, and, perhaps most importantly, Sleepy Creek gives festival attendees a place where they can be themselves.

During my weekend adventure at HarFest 2019 in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, on Oct. 4-6, I saw a bumper sticker on an RV that sums up my experience; it read: “There is no alternative to being yourself” — and Sleepy Creek is exactly that: a place where we can be ourselves, a place where we belong.

Live Review: Luna @ 9:30 Club — 10/5/19

Luna have been making great music for nearly 30 years, but for some reason even after being on major labels, having had songs featured on major movie soundtracks, and the critical praise of not only their peers but of big name music publications (Rolling Stone famously named them “the best band you’ve never heard”), Luna isn’t a household name, though it should be!

In fact, one of their best albums, Penthouse, which celebrates its 25th anniversary next year, was named one of the best 100 albums of the 1990s by Rolling Stone recently. And it’s that same album that was performed in full (plus some, but I’ll get into that in a moment) at the 9:30 Club recently.

Live Review: Talib Kweli, Styles P, and Dead Prez @ The Fillmore Silver Spring — 10/4/19

As a graduate of the School Of Hard Knocks, the course Science of Speech was probably one of my favorite classes. The importance of linguistics when presenting an idea or just involving yourself in casual conversation cannot be emphasized enough. Pairing complex thoughts and ideas into 16 bar verses has been studied for ages but only perfected by an elite few. Honorary professors Talib Kweli, Styles P, and Dead Prez are among those blessed enough to harness the power of speech, which they did at The Fillmore Silver Spring recently.

Live Review: The Ocean Blue @ Union Stage — 10/4/19

Here’s how I like to imagine it happened: Teenaged David Schelzel stood on an overlook above Hershey Park in Pennsylvania and pondered the decade that was coming to a close. “I’m going to take the very best of the ’80s and synthesize it into one band,” he said, reaching deep into England, where the very best new wave and psychedelia had emerged, and scooping all of those sounds into one impossibly sweet band.

And so was born The Ocean Blue, which published its first self-titled album in 1989, and captured the zeitgeist of cool alternative music in one quartet (or so we say!). Quite active in recent years, The Ocean Blue again reminded us just how cool they are in a sold-out show at Union Stage last week.
