In the early ’90s, shoegaze had an underground appeal that ended up becoming an influential blueprint for many bands being formed today. And for me, personally, songs by the Catherine Wheel, My Bloody Valentine, and Slowdive were the soundtrack to relationships, careers, and those ups and downs in life — peaks and valleys like the rhythmic washes of guitar or the lilt of those harmonies buried beneath.

And I still find myself going back to those same sounds, like an old book you’re drawn to again and again, as I did with Slovedive in a live performance at Rams Head Live on Thursday.

Metronomy 05 Joseph Mount fronts Metronomy at Brooklyn Steel in New York City on Nov. 13, 2017.

Although famously self-reliant, Joseph Mount likes a good team — and he’s got one in Metronomy, his four-member (five when touring) English indie pop band.

In performance, Metronomy always show some team spirit through color coordinated outfits (occasionally the same matching outfit), but against that backdrop the individual bandmates shine through their own contributions, as demonstrated in a sold-out show at Brooklyn Steel in New York City on Nov. 13.

In his premiere solo outing, Andrew Savage of Parquet Courts was everything you would like him to be — a calm, cool, and collected urban cowboy with a wry wit and a passion for guitar.

The self-proclaimed A. Savage and his band also presented a few surprises to a very full house at DC9 on Nov. 10, alongside impressive songs from his solo debut album Thawing Dawn.
