I suspect the inclusion of Lucinda Williams among my favorite artists stood out a little on my (now deleted) dating profile, buried as it was among a list that heavily favored new wave, electronic, and industrial artists.

The contrast in genres was apparently notable enough that visitors commented on it more than once. But then my appreciation for Lucinda’s music did in fact arise out of a specific set of circumstances, absent which I might not have discovered her at all.

What if guitarist Steve Kilbey of The Church decided his life wouldn’t be complete until he formed a band with Robin Guthrie?

“Robin, I’ve long admired your work and would love to play with you,” I imagine Steve saying. “There’s just one catch,” he would quickly stipulate. “No vocals. Oh, and let’s dial back on the reverb – we don’t need it.” At this point, I imagine Robin enthusiastically agreeing, with the talented Cocteau Twins guitarist pointing out he’s always wanted to demonstrate what he’s capable of without his armada of effects pedals.

How can so much brilliant sound come from two people? If you’ve heard anything of the thunderous rock of Japandroids — the duo of Brian King (guitars/vocals) and David Prowse (drums/vocals) — you’d have some clue to the answer. One part Bruce Springsteen and two parts Replacements with more than a dash of punk rock thrown in for good measure, Japandroids brought spectacle and inspired energy to Rams Head Live in Baltimore Monday night!

Originally created as a home recording project, Cloud Nothings, the brainchild of Dylan Baldi (guitar/vocals), is definitely one of the most dynamic bands around. There’s a hard edge to many of their songs, especially after their first, self-titled LP, but they are layered with hooks that were impossible to avoid at Ram’s Head Live in Baltimore on Monday.
