Last weekend, California mega-festival organizer Goldenvoice finally fulfilled its pandemic-delayed vision of presenting a gala event consisting solely of alternative new wave and post-punk bands of the ’70s and ’80s coupled with younger bands who have adapted a similar sound in the 2010s and 2020s.
And so it was that an estimated 50,000 people (the capped capacity of the park) streamed into Brookside at the Rose Bowl for the first day of the newly minted, annual Cruel World Festival on Saturday, May 14.
Here is a recap of five of the best acts to play that day.
Cruel World Festival is taking place Saturday, May 14, and Sunday, May 15, 2022 at Brookside at The Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California featuring performances by Morrissey, Bauhaus, Blondie, DEVO, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Psychedelic Furs, Violent Femmes, The Church, and many more.
The lineup repeats performances each day of the festival. The first day is sold out but limited tickets remain for Sunday, May 15!

Peter Murphy visited Baltimore Soundstage recently to celebrate his former gothic rock band Bauhaus with The Ruby Tour: 40 Years of Bauhaus. And he brought along his old Bauhaus bandmate David J. on bass in a rare reunion of Bauhaus players. Paivi Salonen captured the action!

Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins, famous for their stints in Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, and Love in Rockets, came together again to form Poptone in 2017, recruiting Kevin’s daughter Diva Dompé to perform as a trio. With a self-titled debut album released only days ago, Poptone will perform a set drawing largely on the songs of Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets at The Fillmore Silver Spring on Sunday, July 1.

What to do if you’re Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins, iconic members of Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, and Love and Rockets, and you’ve already created all of the quintessential gothic post-punk songs? Songs like “She’s in Parties,” “Go!,” and “So Alive?”
Well, you recruit Kevin’s daughter Diva Dompe to play bass and smartly form a career retrospective trio called Poptone. Poptone brought those signature tunes to Cloak and Dagger Festival in Los Angeles on Oct. 21.
