One of the biggest metal bands harvested from American soil stopped in Bristow, Virginia, recently to kick ass in front of about 20,000 devoted fans at Jiffy Lube Live! Of course, I’m talking about hard-rocking musical pioneers Korn.

Jim Weider and G.E. Smith, the Masters of the Telecaster, came to town recently to join with local guitar legend Tom Principato for a pair of back-to-back weekend gigs at Rams Head on Stage in Annapolis and City Winery in Ivy City DC. The performances were billed as a tribute to Roy Buchanan, another DC guitar legend and pioneer of the Telecaster sound.

On their new album Modern Mirror, Drab Majesty continue to dig their heels into modern paranoia, hypnotic melodies, and mystical lyricism. Deb Demure and Mona D released Modern Mirror in July via Dais Records, and now the duo visit Union Stage for a performance on Thursday, Aug. 8.

Baltimore’s reputation has taken a hit over the past year or so due to a recent spike in violence and crime in the city. Friday night, I got to witness first-hand how music can bring people together and help us to be bigger than our problems at Baltimore Soundstage thanks to Maryland’s own Pasadena.

“How are you doing, general DC area?” Bryce Vine asked the crowd, a sea of positive shouts and cheers responding. Earlier that night, Bryce mentioned that a Silver Spring show being considered a DC tour stop was strange — and here he was performing at The Fillmore Silver Spring recently. The casual way that Bryce addressed the audience made the statement seem like a passing thought you would share with a friend. It was fitting for his laid back and easygoing persona characteristic of his Southern California origin.

The Steve Miller Band teamed up with Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives to deliver on a night of classic American music at Wolf Trap recently, with Steve and company providing plenty of rock and Marty and friends delivering the country. Jason Nicholson was there to photograph it all!

The first time I finally saw the Violent Femmes perform, which was at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 2013, the band played its debut full-length album in its entirety. Given that “Blister in the Sun” and “Add It Up” were college-listening staples for me, I figured I would at least check a box and enjoy the show.
Little did I know the Violent Femmes would be so damn good as a live band, using that Coachella appearance to spring into annual summer touring, which this year included another stop at The Anthem recently.
