“I had a little freakout when my guitar broke last night,” said Captain Sensible during a sold-out show at Black Cat.

“Don’t you freakout now,” The Captain said to the audience. “Unless you want to freakout a little.” He paused. “Monty, dig me out of this hole, will you?”

Keyboardist Monty Oxymoron smiled and asked, “What’s a little freakout in the entire History of the World?” And without missing a beat, The Damned launched into “The History of the World (Part 1),” a single dating to The Black Album in 1980.

Six years between tours and eight between albums seems like a long time, but for the North Carolina-based Mountain Man, it certainly doesn’t sound like years apart on their second full-length LP, Magic Ship (Nonesuch / Bella Union). Part of that reason is that recipe of rhythm and harmony that Amelia Meath, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, and Molly Sarlé each add to the pot. Part traditional Appalachian folk songs and part post-modern Americana, the music created by this trio was both pleasant and off-center, an often transcendent stew that was totally engrossing at Sixth & I on Monday.

When I arrived at Gypsy Sally’s for Southern Culture on the Skids recently, all the tables had been taken. Finally, a friend and I found a couple of folding chairs and set ourselves up near the sound board. We thought that the venue couldn’t get any more crowded, but the legions of SCOTS fans just kept pouring into the venue.

Lauren Mayberry, ever chipper, bantered with the audience during the sold-out show by Chvrches at The Anthem recently, making reference to an unkind review from earlier in the band’s career.

“It said, the only thing standing between Chvrches and stardom is the person standing at the front of the stage,” Lauren said, pausing while the audience groaned appropriately. “Well, how do you like me now, motherfucker?”

On a picture perfect autumn day, beneath a partly sunny sky, over 3,000 people showed up to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to express emotions of love, support, and hope. On Saturday afternoon, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention held their Out of the Darkness Community Walk in the Nation’s Capital. Saturday’s walk is just one of hundreds that take place all across the country this year to help bring awareness and raise money, to work towards changing the culture’s approach to mental health.

This year, Brent Smith and Zach Myers, the lead singer and lead guitarist of Shinedown, participated in the walk.

Music Park: Glorietta @ Rock and Roll Hotel — 10/19/18

Rock music history is littered with supergroups and friend records (not exactly bands, but brief collectives). Glorietta is kind of the former, more the latter; supergroup implies major fame for all or some of the members, and as much as I think they all deserve nationwide recognition, their achievements are all strongly in the indie musicverse. The talents behind those achievements were clearly on display at the Rock and Roll Hotel recently.
