Don’t Miss: The Temper Trap @ 9:30 Club, 10/6/16

The Temper Trap broke out in a big way in 2009 with their epiphanic dance single, “Sweet Disposition”. Back when DC9 held their weekly Liberation Dance Party, this song was among the standouts on rotation.

After picking up their first album, Conditions, I was more than ready to see them live at the 2010 Lollapalooza in Chicago. I walked away feeling pretty good (and then went to see The National and Soundgarden, so the feeling continued for some time…)

Sadly, that’s the only time I’ve seen them live. Let’s rectify that.

The Temper Trap, an indie rock band, comes to the 9:30 Club on Thursday, October 6th. Tickets are still available, so get yours here.

They released their third album, Thick as Thieves, back in June. Four years after their last album – where have you been, guys?

We’re glad they’re back. Their first single, “Fall Together”, is an anthemic track that will also get you back on the dance floor in a heartbeat.

Don’t Miss: Gang of Four @ 9:30 Club, 10/8/16

Gang of Four founder and guitarist Andy Gill recruited a new vocalist a while back, and John “Gaoler” Sterry took up duties as the frontman of Gang of Four on the road.

A few years ago, Gang of Four released a new album with Gaoler on vocals, and now they have dropped a live album, Live… In The Moment, which appeared Sept. 9 via Metropolis Records.

Now Andy, Gaoler, bassist Thomas McNiece, and drummer Jonny Finnigan are on the road again, opening for Omaha synthpop band The Faint, and they all stop at the 9:30 Club on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Listen to “England’s in My Bones” by Gang of Four (feat. Alison Mossheart) from their Gaoler-fronted album What Happens Next on Soundcloud:

Gang of Four and The Faint kick off their tour tonight at the famous First Avenue, and that very strong bill will hit DC soon. Gaoler gives the act a different feel with slightly goth overtimes, but he does a great job with songs new and old. “Gaoler’s sweetly husky voice carries you through the song and it seems completely natural,” I said of his performance of “I Parade Myself” after the band last visited the 9:30 Club on March 2015.

Tickets are available online. Don’t sleep on this one, as this bill will sell out!

Music Park: George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic @ 9:30 Club — 9/24/16

George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic (P-Funk) brought the house down on Saturday at DC’s 9:30 Club!

The audience embraced the spirit of the band as they awaited the show, dancing to the music that was playing in the venue. This was something new to me. I have never seen so many people enjoying the music played before a set. It was clear the mood of the night was set as soon as people walked through the doors.

Ticket Giveaway: Warpaint @ 9:30 Club, 10/4/16

I adore Warpaint. And they really caught my attention with their single “Love Is to Die” on their self-titled sophomore album in 2014. I think they hit peak heartbroken dreampop, but they did so in such an articulate, and yes feminine, way that the song proved irresistible.

And soon afterward, as a big Duran Duran admirer, I enjoyed their very good take on “The Chauffeur” for the recent tribute album, Making Patterns Rhyme. It was indescribably a wholly appropriate cover, and I would like Simon Le Bon to name check it when it comes to Duran Duran covers over William Shatner’s “Planet Earth.”

The Head and the Heart return to the DAR Constitution Hall on Sunday, October 22nd, touting their just released third album, Signs of Light.

Get your tickets here. As a cool bonus, when you buy your ticket online, you get a free copy of Signs of Light, either a physical CD or a digital copy.

The well received first single, “All We Ever Knew”, currently sits at #6 on Billboard’s Alternative chart and reached #1 on the AAA chart. It’s an upbeat ode to realizing that sometimes ‘it’s time to wake up’ from a dream that isn’t working.

Entertainment Weekly says about Signs of Light, “The collection is their most electric and uplifting set yet.” After listening to it a couple of times myself, I tend to agree.

The Head and the Heart is an indie folk/rock band that formed in 2009 in Seattle. The band is Josiah Johnson (vocals, guitar), Jonathan Russell (vocals, guitar) – who is from Richmond, VA, Charity Rose Thielen (violin, banjo), Chris Zasche (bass), Kenny Hensley (piano) and Tyler Williams (drums).

I last caught The Head and the Heart perform live in DC in 2014 (at the Constitution Hall no less) and based on that experience, this is one show you don’t want to miss!

Declan McKenna, a British indie rocker, will open the show.

Don’t Miss: Electric Six @ Black Cat — 10/2/16

Detroit dance funk band Electric Six are celebrating Halloween in October with the release of a new album — Fresh Blood for Tired Vampyres, out Oct. 7 via Metropolis Records!

Electric Six frontman Dick Valentine sure seems like he’s going to live forever given the way his band knocks out a new album every year. And with this new album, Dick and company have strived to group all of their past lives in one place by combining electropop, R&B, dance and more genres into one album.

And with the new album comes a tour! Electric Six return to the Black Cat this Sunday, Oct. 2!

Listen to “I’ll Be in Touch” from the new album by Electric Six via YouTube:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gc8CFsHg0vU]

Fresh Blood for Tired Vampyres covers a lot of ground from the Grandmaster Flash-inspired “Number of the Beast” to the smooth tour of the NYC outer boroughs “Mood Is Improving” as well as radio-ready pop tracks “Dance with Dark Forces” and “I’ll Be in Touch.”

And never fear! The Electric Six have long memories, and after 12 albums they still remember how much everyone loves their 2003 debut, so we may well hear “Dance Commander” or “Danger! High Voltage” or “Gay Bar” also!

Tickets are available online.

United v Crew

Season Record: 8-9-13 (37 points)

Your D.C. United put on a clinic last Saturday against Orlando City, scoring at will and winning 4-1.

Patrick Mullins netted two more goals, and has been a positive force in the 11 games he’s played in since coming from New York City FC in July.

The United jumped into the sixth and final playoff spot with the result, and as a bonus, are one point behind Montreal for fifth place.

With only four games remaining (including two home games), the United should keep the momentum alive against Columbus at home on Wednesday, September 28th.

It should be a fun ride closing out the regular season!

Buy your tickets here.

The final home game for the United is October 16.

Snapshots: Preservation Hall Jazz Band @ Lincoln Theatre — 9/23/16

Preservation Hall Jazz Band @ Lincoln Theatre 23/09/2016
Preservation Hall Jazz Band performs at Lincoln Theatre on Friday, Sept. 23, 2016.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band was in town for National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) opening festivities. Following their Friday show at the National Mall, the audiences at Lincoln Theatre were treated to a second helping of New Orleans jazz.

As a special guest later in the show, none other than Dave Grohl walked onto the stage to play a second set of drums. When the encores were done, the music never ended: part of the band including Mr Grohl walked out of the theatre in a New Orleans style parade. The performance continued across U Street toward the Black Cat, followed by the enthusiastic crowds.
