Dave Damiani & The No Vacancy Orchestra welcomed a very special guest to its residency at Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club on Thursday –- the irrepressible Molly Ringwald, Gen-X “it girl” and all around charming woman.

Singing jazz and big band standards, Dave and Molly along with The No Vacancy Orchestra, which included some players from our local Airmen of Note, entertained an attentive crowd. Dave kicked things off with early songs like “Nice ‘n’ Easy” by Frank Sinatra, looking and sounding every bit an old-fashioned crooner. (Waxing nostalgic for things “old-fashioned” during a performance of a song of the same name, Dave offered up the suggestion of drinking an Old-Fashioned. Not a bad idea, sir!) Dave captures Sinatra’s “tough but tender” persona well.

When you listen to LP’s new single, “Lost on You,” the most amazing thing about it is her voice — it’s a singular voice that occasionally flies high through the air and occasionally swings low through gravel. And yet the voice always sounds like it belongs to the same woman.

Dutch collaborators Willem van Hanegem and Ward van der Harst formed W&W in 2007, and since then the DJ duo have fused styles and mixed influences ranging from trance to electro.

The DJs currently rank #14 in the DJ Mag Top 100, and they are fresh off a dominating performance at the Miami Music Week/Winter Music Conference. (Their Ultra Music Festival set in Miami has more than 2 million YouTube views!) And they are bringing their show to Echostage tomorrow, Saturday, July 30.

And W&W are certainly busy making new music as well this year. They began 2016 with “Arcade,” a new collaboration with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, and a vocal solo single “How Many.” Most recently, they have released “Live the Night” with Hardwell and Lil Jon on their own Mainstage Music imprint.

Listen to “Live the Night” by W&W and Hardwell and Lil Jon on Soundcloud:

Speaking of Mainstream Music, they continue to curate productions on their label for fellow artists including Armin van Buuren, Headhunterz, Dash Berlin, 3LAU, Andrew Rayel, Tritonal, Sick Individuals and many more!

Oh and if that weren’t enough, Russian house musician Arty opens for W&W, still fresh off his debut album Glorious in 2015. Prepare to dance ‘til you drop.

Brother and sister musical duo Broods have come a long way in a short time! Hailing from New Zealand, Georgia and Caleb Nott released their debut album in 2014 and then toured extensively. Now they’ve returned with a second album, Conscious, and they are performing at the 9:30 Club on Monday, August 1.

The sophomore album, released June 24 via Capitol Records, boasts a few key collaborations, including a guest appearance by Tove Lo on “Freak of Nature” and co-writing from fellow New Zealander Lorde on “Heartlines,” the upcoming next single from the record.

The first single, released in April, is “Free,” a pounding R&B-tinged synth track. Watch the official music video for “Free” by Broods on YouTube:

Broods recorded the new album in Los Angeles and New Zealand with production assistance from Joel Little (Lorde, Ellie Goulding, Jarryd James) as well as Alex Hope (Troye Sivan) and Captain Cuts (Halsey, Tove Lo).

Speaking of Jarryd James, the Australian alt-R&B singer is opening for Broods on this tour! Last month, he released a new single called “1000x,” which features a guest appearance by Broods! Give it a listen on Soundcloud, and turn up early to see Jarryd:

Forever in our hearts as a young lady struggling with high school romance thanks to John Hughes, Ms. Molly Ringwald has turned her attention to singing jazz recently. And she’s coming to DC metro to sing jazz at Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club tomorrow night, Thursday July 28.

Molly started singing jazz at a young age, thanks to the influence of her jazz musician father. But she released her debut jazz album, Except Sometimes, in 2013 via Concord Records (which included a tribute to the late Mr. Hughes). Tomorrow, she’s performing a tribute to Nat “King” Cole and his daughter Natalie Cole (particularly timely as Ms. Cole passed away only recently). For her tribute, Molly will join Dave Damiani and the No Vacancy Orchestra, along with two of Natalie Cole’s bandmates, including world-renowned trumpeter Bijon Watson.

As a reader of Parklife DC, you can attend Molly Ringwald’s show tomorrow at half-price! Consult the flyer below and buy your ticket online at this link with the code: BBJMOLLY.

Music Park: Marissa Nadler @ DC9 — 7/24/16

Singer-songwriter Marissa Nadler led the intimate crowd circled expectantly around the DC9 stage through 13 atmospheric songs about dreams and yearning and finding your way out of the woods.

In the small space of DC9, Marissa’s songs resonated with introspective lyrics and haunting vocals that were soulful and moving.

Touring on her newest album, Strangers, Marissa played at least eight of her new songs. She left the single “Janie In Love” off the setlist however, indicating she was still working on how to play the live version. The new album focuses on loneliness, and characters that are fractured, disillusioned, and delicate, hence they are the voice of ‘strangers’.

930 Club
Here’s the 9:30 Club. Will you go here and other places and blog about concerts for us? Thanks!

As we posted to Craigslist recently:

Are you a music nerd with a knack for the written word? You should join our team at Parklife DC!

Our well-regarded music blog at Parklife DC is seeking volunteer bloggers to review concerts around town. We get lots and lots of pitches to review shows in the DC metro area. So many pitches that we could never fulfill them all alone, even if we wanted to do so.

However, you can help! As a music blogger for Parklife DC, you would go to shows and review them as our media representative. Your access to said concerts, of course, would be covered. This is a great opportunity for someone who really knows a particular music space well to show off their knowledge and talents.

We have entire genres of music that are underappreciated on Parklife DC, ranging from EDM to jazz to hip hop to country to folk, and there are significant opportunities for you to get your name known as a reviewer in these spaces.

Oh, and photographers: We have many unused photo passes that we would love to share. Please contact us as well if you might like to volunteer?

Interested? Drop us a line at parklifedc@gmail.com! We are happy to tell you more or throw you into the fire if you’re ready to blog.

DC United's New Logo

Season Record: 5-8-7 (22 points)

Your D.C. United are in a bit of a funk, going 1-2-2 (5 points) in their last five games, including a 4-1 spanking by Toronto last Saturday, July 23rd.

Starting this Sunday, July 31st, the United play four straight home games (and eight overall remaining) and have a good chance to right the ship for a chance at a playoff spot. They are currently in 8th place in the Eastern Conference, looking to climb the ladder.

First up are the 4th place Montreal Impact (29 points). The United need this game, so I’m confident they will step up and get a result.

Álvaro Saborio continues to lead the United with 4 goals on the season, but they need a lot more goals if they want to make 2016 interesting.

Don’t Miss: The Bangles @ 9:30 Club, 8/21/16

Bangles-by-Karen-Filter
The Bangles at the start of their career (Photo by Karen Filter)

If you were alive and watching television in 1986, and you previously did not know of The Bangles, MTV introduced them to a wider world with the music video for their hit “Walk Like an Egyptian,” which features a famously “sexy stare” from guitarist and co-vocalist Susanna Hoffs. In particular, if you were a young man of a certain age, those eyes were forever seared into your brain (in a good way).

Revisit the moment in the official music video for “Walk Like An Egyptian” (with famed stare around 2:45 mark):

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cv6tuzHUuuk]

The Bangles formed as a quartet in Los Angeles and released their debut album in 1984, hooking many of us with their famous cover of “Going Down to Liverpool” by Katrina and the Waves. Embracing the psych-folk of the Paisley Underground, the ladies burned up the radio with other hits like “Manic Monday,” “Eternal Flame” and “A Hazy Shade of Winter,” a terrific cover of the Simon & Garfunkel number recorded for the film Less Than Zero.

Today, sisters Vicki Peterson and Debbi Peterson, along with Susanna, are revisiting their early days of the band with a collection, titled Ladies and Gentlemen… The Bangles! The album is a 16-track collection of remastered ’80s-era rarities, demos, live recordings, and more, including The Bangles’ debut single and all of the tracks from their self-titled EP (which has been unavailable since its initial release on vinyl in 1982).

Watch a cool trailer for the album!

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbYTwylFm3s]

To celebrate the June 24 release of the album on CD via Omnivore Recordings, The Bangles have hit the road once again as a trio, and they will visit the 9:30 Club on Sunday, August 21, to play songs from across their amazing catalog.

Said Susanna of the new compilation: “I feel a very special connection to our early recordings. The garage of my parents’ house was our musical laboratory, and we took all the flavors of our favorite bands and mixed up a concoction of jangly guitars, McCartney-inspired bass parts, grooves powered by punk energy, and harmonies galore! These songs and recordings were our musical manifesto — all that mattered and inspired us, fueled by youthful energy, hope and blind ambition.”

L.A. rock trio Cardiac open for The Bangles. Tickets are available online.
