Franklin James Fisher performs with Algiers at Black Cat on June 28, 2018.
You’ll believe in the effectiveness of soul music as a form of protest when you see Algiers, the experimental rock quartet from Atlanta.
Frontman Franklin James Fisher has a powerful voice that goes low or hits high when called upon to do so, but mostly it booms gracefully through a room as it did at Black Cat on Thursday.

The music of Rising Appalachia seems intent on taking you to places. Places that are off the main roads, overgrown with kudzu, under the lazy glow of june bugs rising from beneath the porch swing. Their regional affiliations are alluded to in the band’s name, and as their set slowly unfolded recently at the 930 Club, they took the audience on a tour of the hazy south east.

If you know “Take Your Time (Do It Right),” that infectious post-disco tune from 1980, then you know The SOS Band, who will perform it and other hits for you in a show at The Birchmere on Monday, Feb. 19.
