Music Park: Omar Souleyman @ Moogfest — 5/18/17

On June 2, Omar Souleyman releases To Syria, With Love via Mad Decent — his third album in four years. The album consists of seven tracks featuring Omar and keyboardist Hasan Alo performing traditional Syrian folk music set to the sound of synthesizers.

In the run-up to the release, Omar performed in some US cities in May, including a stop at Motorco Music Hall in Durham, North Carolina, for Moogfest 2017. There, Omar and Hasan took to the outdoor stage for a transcendental show that drew a large crowd.

Music Park: All Things Go Fall Classic @ Yards Park — 10/8/16

Last week, I ruminated on how things seemed to be going swimmingly for the All Things Go Fall Classic, held in DC on Saturday: Hurricane Matthew wasn’t going to approach DC, Passion Pit had not canceled, top act Empire of the Sun released exciting new music.

Then, Saturday came with consistent and gloomy rain despite no hurricane, turning all of Yards Park into a giant mudpit. Everything got splashed with mud, and the Fall Classic was turning into a Tough Mudder for the dancehall set, whether you liked it or not.

Music Park: Moogfest 2016 Pt. 3 of 3 (Durham, NC) — 5/21/16

Saturday, May 21, could have been Gary Numan Day in Durham, NC, as the Moogfest headliner had quite a day there. First, he received the 2016 Moog Innovation Award in an afternoon ceremony, and then he performed the third of three concerts a few hours later at Fletcher Hall in the Carolina Theatre.

Sadly, I couldn’t make Gary’s award ceremony as the 2pm time conflicted with a Moogfest show by Gwenno, who was high on my “to see” list for the synthesizer festival.

Toward the end of her show, Welsh songstress Gwenno apologized for the sad lyrics of songs on her debut solo album, Y Dydd Olaf, which after all was inspired by a Welsch dystopian science fiction novel of the same name from 1976. (The title translates as “the last day.”)
