Trying to paint Gary Clark Jr. into a box is an exercise in futility. When you started to believe that he’s “just” the next great guitar virtuoso, Gary dropped a soul song that featured a vocal range showcasing his falsetto. When you could not stop dancing along with one of his upbeat and catchy rock hits, Gary played an R&B number that would fit into Motown. And if you ever dared to think that Gary doesn’t have something new to say, he went ahead and released This Land in February, an album and title track that tackles racism in America.

Sometimes, it’s easy to become disenchanted with the industry of music, its lab-grown, polished and cut stones. Have you ever taken a melon-sized rock and thrown it to the ground, its hidden crystals shining on the pavement? Like a little cave of beauty, for a moment, a second in time.

Memory is a strange thing.  Some things seem made to be remembered one day and forgotten the next but others, like the smells and tastes of childhood, or, in this case, hearing songs played live, are burned into those synapses so clearly that it can become a little disorienting.  This is where I found myself on Thursday night at The Anthem experiencing Jawbreaker for the first time in, what, 20… no, 24 years later.

The Birchmere transformed into a swing lounge one evening recently when Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the OGs of contemporary swing revival, made their 15th appearance at the iconic music venue. The band offered a 90-minute performance that featured past and present hits from their vast catalog, along with a few numbers in tribute to the New Orleans music scene from which Scotty Morris, the band’s leader, draws deep influence.

Maggie Rogers is beloved by her fans. That her recent 930 Club shows sold out weeks in advance provided ample evidence of the fact.
