Hailing from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Superchunk has been blazing punk riffs for just shy of 30 years. Although the band needs no introduction perhaps what is needed is a reintroduction. Superchunk — consisting of Mac McCaughan (vocals/guitar), Laura Balance (bass), Jim Wilbur (guitar), and Jon Wurster (drums) — just released their 11th studio album, What a Time to Be Alive, this past Friday. On the night before, they played to a sold-out crowd at Ottobar in Baltimore.

Dubbed our friendly neighbor to the north, Canada has a history of R&B generosity to the United States. Deborah Cox, Tamia and The Weekend are proof that the nation of maples is a credible musical partner, and 34-year-old Quiet Storm songstress and Toronto-native Melanie Fiona is no exception as we saw at the Howard Theatre recently.

There are worse ways to spend Valentine’s Day than getting your face melted off by Sleigh Bells’ monster riffs and senses-assaulting light show in a very crowded 9:30 Club.

Kids say the darnedest things, especially when prompted by a pint-sized pop star.

“Make them say Ring Pops.”

In his solo album Traveler, released in 2012 and co-produced with Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Jónsi), Trey Anastasio imagines a convergence of the many roads he has taken in his remarkable musical career. That convergence was on display Valentine’s Day evening at Sixth & I, where the frontman for Phish took the stage for a solo acoustic performance in a sold-out show.

“I was in Washington, DC, not too long ago in a different capacity,” said Carla Bruni, former first lady of France, at The Birchmere on Tuesday night, “but I much prefer to be here at The Birchmere.”

During a sold-out show at The Birchmere, worldly charm and poise were in great supply as the singer and model brought with her sophisticated sensibilities and class not generally found on some farflung US stages.
