DC breathed a sigh of relief when Ex Hex — the city’s most interesting and engaging rock trio — finally released a second studio album, It’s Real, via Merge Records in March, five years after the band’s debut album. Now it’s really real as Ex Hex headline 9:30 Club once again on Friday, May 10, in what is sure to be a killer show.

Noise trio Health recently released VOL4::Slaves of Fear, a new studio album, and the band arrived to perform their new songs at Rock and Roll Hotel recently. Paivi was there to shoot the show!

I had the great honor of covering Kali Uchis and Jorja Smith last year in 2018 (check those posts out by clicking on the artists’ names). When it was announced that they would tour jointly together, I thought ” What a perfect pair!” Luckily, the tour started in Kali’s hometown recently, and we were in for a treat from both ladies in a sold-out show at The Anthem.

From their beginning in a Los Angeles basement in 1981, The Dream Syndicate’s neo-psychedelic sound has been wildly influential in the indie-rock scene and most notably the Paisley Underground. The band will perform at U Street Music Hall on Friday, May 10, in support of their sixth studio album, These Times (which drops *this* Friday via Anti-Records).

In commemoration of the recent 10th anniversary of her self-titled debut album, Santigold will come to The Fillmore Silver Spring on Monday, May 6, on her 10 Years Golder Tour. She’ll perform her debut album in its entirety, along with songs from throughout her career, including off her latest mixtape-style album I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions.

Dark waver TR/ST, aka Robert Alfons, released The Destroyer – Part 1, his third studio album, last month via House Arrest Records, Royal Mountain Records, and Grouch. TR/ST arrives at U Street Music Hall for a memorable night of dark wave on Sunday, May 5.

Imogen Heap released her last full-length record in 2014 and in recent years, she has released several singles. The lack of a new record has not dulled the enthusiasm of her fans however: Imogen quickly sold out a night at the Lincoln Theatre in DC, and added a second night on Saturday, May 4.

I’m way late to the party when it comes to The Mountain Goats but my excuse is that the musical road that brought me to John Darnielle and company was very long and winding. To say the least. It finally took me to 9:30 Club to see the band recently.
