If you’re a fan of bluegrass, you likely know Town Mountain. The North Carolina quintet is at the forefront of the next generation of bluegrass greatness. They have a new album coming on Oct. 26th — New Freedom Blues — and the band made a stop at Pearl Street Warehouse recently to put on a show and promote the album.

Traditional Appalachian folk band Mountain Man released Magic Ship, the band’s second studio album, on Partisan Records earlier this year. The indie folk trio performs at Sixth & I in DC on Monday, Oct. 22.

Growing up in the suburbs of Akron, Ohio, I would listen at night to Kent State Public Radio WKSU. On the weekends, that station would broadcast folk music. Saturday evening’s concert by The Milk Carton Kids thus was something of a return to my personal roots.

Normally, the 9:30 Club has the latest shows in town. On weekends, those shows go even later. Headliners regularly go on after 10. It was a lucky thing that I checked the showtime, because it turned that the Murder by Death concert was an early show!

Gruff Rhys has been providing listeners with a steady stream of clever and catchy songs since the mid-’90s, first as leader of the Super Furry Animals and later as a collaborator with people like Boom Bip, Damon Albarn, Mogwai, Danger Mouse, and Simian Mobile Disco. Oh yeah, he’s also released five pretty amazing solo albums as well. Gruff brought that significant catalog to DC9 recently.

When I look back at every festival I attend, there is a definitive moment where everything clicks, and I have an epiphany of sorts wherein I come to understand what that festival means to me.

Garbage is celebrating 20 years of Version 2.0, their influential second album, with a new remastered edition and a tour. That tour lands at The Lincoln Theatre in DC for two nights. The first night sold out fast, but tickets are still available for Garbage’s concert on Monday, Oct. 22.

Sarah Borges roared into Americana as the lead singer of the Broken Singles. After a stint solo, she’s back with the band, and they released a new album, Love’s Middle Name, on Oct. 12 via Blue Corn Music.

Now, Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles open for The Bottle Rockets at Gypsy Sally’s on Thursday, Oct. 18.
