The director John Waters once said, “be a stealth bomber for the counterculture.” That quote came to mind as I watched Brent Cobb at City Winery in DC recently. With his smooth, relaxed, easygoing demeanor and delivery, it’s easy to forget just how much range he has, and how much of a rebellious spirit is just underneath the calm exterior. As a performer, Brent is equally capable of sustaining an audience’s attention sitting on a stool, playing a solo acoustic set, fielding requests, as he is with a full band, going into territory that borders on Led Zeppelinesque heavy metal. And even when he’s delivering a mellow song, if you listen closely to the words, you realize that Brent is most definitely stirring the pot.

Live Review: Louis Tomlinson @ The Anthem — 2/10/22

Walking up to The Anthem for Louis Tomlinson recently, the area surrounding the venue was busier than I’ve ever seen it. Louis is a pop superstar who initially rose to fame just under 12 years ago at just 19 years old, when he joined four other teenagers in creating the internationally loved band, One Direction. Ever since the band’s indefinite hiatus in 2016, Louis has been crafting his own music as a solo artist. The crowd that came out on Thursday definitely proved that his hard work has more than paid off.

In the span of just a handful of years, Billie Eilish has gone from selling out clubs, like the Black Cat in 2018, to huge arena shows like her recent Capital One Arena concert. A testament to not only her incredible stage presence but also the songs that connect to her audience on an almost physical level.

Starting the show off with thunderous drums by brother and collaborator, Finneas, and her long-time drummer, Andrew Marshall, until the opening lines of “bury a friend” as the crowd exploded into applause, singing along to every word. And it wasn’t long before Billie danced her way down the long walkway to sing to fans quite literally face-to-face. One thing that I kept coming back to was how no matter how large the crowd gets, Billie Eilish does make it about the fans and the experience of feeling some connection, even in a room that spans an entire city block.

Few musical acts can pull off a cover album, let alone two — but when your group makeup is so dynamic and its skills so refined, bringing a tribute recording to life can yield fresh and forward-thinking interpretations of long appreciated music.

Hollis Brown, a seasoned indie rock band proud to be from Queens, is so distinct in its composition and so genuine in approach as to make that kind of effort happen with stylish nonchalance. Make no mistake, though — this group is anything but a “cover band.” Hollis Brown has recorded a venerated catalogue of its own music to position itself as one of the most authentic and astonishing acts to call New York home these days.

“Boxing’s got styles like music got style…some styles are slick and creative…and others aren’t,” Miles Davis wrote in his autobiography — “Miles.” Like the iconic trumpeter, D Smoke is a student of music and boxing. During a recent show at The Fillmore Silver Spring, the Inglewood, California, rapper stepped onto the stage with the enthusiasm of a welterweight contender.

Lift gets tricky when you’re breaking curses from another life… These words from the song, “Reproductive” off the new Shamir album, Heterosexuality, being released this week, are personal but after everything leading up to its release could be speaking of something more universal. Heterosexuality is an amazing record and really showcases Shamir’s immense talent — from the opening “Gay Agenda” with its distorted drums and a voice that cuts through to exclaim, “You’re just stuck in the box that was made for me / And you’re mad I got out and I’m living free” to the closer, the aforementioned, “Reproductive,” which Shamir opened with at the 9:30 Club recently, opening for Courtney Barnett.

Hailed by the New York Times as “one of the great soul interpreters of her generation”, Bettye LaVette is a vocalist who can take any type of song and make it completely her own. To quote the late, great George Jones, “Bettye is truly a singer’s singer.”

Hear Bettye for yourself in her next DC performance at The Hamilton Live on Wednesday, Feb. 16.
