Music Park: Goodnight Moonshine @ Pearl Street Warehouse — 5/31/18

Goodnight Moonshine, the project of married couple Molly Venter and Eben Pariser, appeared at Pearl Street Warehouse on Thursday in their Keep the Spark Tour alongside Eben’s regular band, Roosevelt Dime.

Virtuoso guitarist Johnny Marr will release his third solo album, Call the Comet, on June 15 via New Voodoo/Warner Bros. Records. Johnny will embark on an extensive US tour in the fall, with a show at The Fillmore Silver Spring on Wednesday, Oct. 17.

Music Park: Rising Appalachia @ 9:30 Club — 5/25/18

The music of Rising Appalachia seems intent on taking you to places. Places that are off the main roads, overgrown with kudzu, under the lazy glow of june bugs rising from beneath the porch swing. Their regional affiliations are alluded to in the band’s name, and as their set slowly unfolded recently at the 930 Club, they took the audience on a tour of the hazy south east.

Around Town: Ticketfly Down!, 5/31/18

Update June 3: Individual links to purchase tickets for shows through Ticketfly are now active, and Parklife DC will resume running previews for Ticketfly shows. The main Ticketfly website, and many of its hosted sites, remain down, however.

Concert ticket website Ticketfly.com has been experiencing intermittent problems this week, and today it is down entirely, taking out venue websites with it. This includes websites for 9:30 Club, DC9, Pearl Street Warehouse, and many other DC venues.

Make sure to put the Kingman Island Bluegrass and Folk Festival on your calendar for Saturday, June 9. For just $35 a ticket, you get eight and a half hours of music, from noon to 8:30, with five stages of acts to choose from. The festival is family friendly, including your four-legged children!

The festival has booked a diverse set of outstanding artists to perform this year. Headliners Ganstagrass, known for the Emmy-nominated theme song to the FX series Justified, play a unique brand of bluegrass/hip-hop fusion.

Interview: Midge Ure (@ Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club, 6/5/18)

On June 8, Midge Ure will release Orchestrated, his latest album, in the United States. Orchestrated features orchestral versions of his well-known solo hits as well as favorite selections from Ultravox, including “If I Was,” “Fragile,” “Dancing with Tears in My Eyes,” “Vienna,” and “Reap the Wild Wind.”

Midge will perform some of those songs with his touring band at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club in a show with Paul Young on Tuesday, June 5. Several days ago, I had the pleasure of chatting with Midge about the show and his future projects.

Local singer-songwriter Karen Jonas independently releases Butter, her third full-length album, on Friday, June 1. On the very next day, she will perform her new country/Americana tunes at Pearl Street Warehouse!

Songwriters Molly Venter of Americana group Red Molly and Eben Pariser of Brooklyn quintet Roosevelt Dime together are husband and wife. Together, they also are folk duo Goodnight Moonshine. Goodnight Moonshine takes its Keep the Spark Tour to Pearl Street Warehouse on Thursday, May 31, and the band releases a new record, I’m The Only One Who Will Tell You, You’re Bad, on Friday, June 1.

Matthew Stephen “M.” Ward is one prolific fellow! In addition to releasing his own solo albums, beginning with Duet for Guitars in 1999, M. hangs out with Zooey Deschanel in She & Him and joins up with folk-rock supergroup Monsters of Folk. He’s coming around on his own for a solo show at 9:30 Club on Saturday, June 16, and you can win tickets to go with Parklife DC.
