John McEuen (Photo by Alan Nahigian)
John McEuen, along with the String Wizards, performed an enchanting night of songs and stories at The Hamilton Live recently. McEuen, who I interviewed last year, was a founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in 1966, and he played with the band for the better part of the next 50 years. Over the course of the evening, John shared stories from his time with the legendary, beginning with its roots as a jug band.

Paul Thorn (Photo courtesy Blind Ambition Management)
Paul Thorn plays a mix of roots rock, R&B, and gospel, black and white, all with a hint of his native Tupelo country twang. That’s an accurate description, but it does not convey of who Paul Thorn is. He shared some insights into the question during his performance at The Birchmere recently.

Over the past few years Kevin Morby has grown exponentially both as a performer and as a songwriter. Vocalist Arrow de Wilde sang, thrashed, and crawled around stage as if utterly possessed. Indeed, the spirit of rock n’ roll lives on inside her band Starcrawler, and the four Los Angeles punks struck like glam lightning in an opening set for The Distillers at 9:30 Club recently.

Steve Poltz (Photo by Laura Partain)
You may not have the heard name Steve Poltz, but you’ve almost certainly heard his music. Steve, who opened for roots rocker Paul Thorn recently at The Birchmere, co-wrote the massive hit “You Were Meant For Me” with Jewel. In his own magical and vibrant way, Steve told the audience the story behind that song, which began on a trip the two took to Mexico to go surfing, where they ended up on a drug bust with the Mexican federal police.
