It isn’t often when a band covers Tears for Fears and Michael Jackson in the same performance. But such was the case when NO BS! Brass Band took the stage recently at the Black Cat for a raw funk-filled, performance.

The Front Bottoms returned to DC exactly one year after their last visit at The Fillmore Silver Spring. This time, they stopped by The Anthem — and they didn’t come alone! The Front Bottoms teamed up with Manchester Orchestra for a dynamic set from both bands on Saturday.

Since last year, when Tash Sultana sold out the 9:30 Club, she has created a huge fanbase in the United States, leading her to play at the The Anthem recently. On the eve before Thanksgiving Day, when many people were heading out of town, I was lucky enough to enjoy an evening with Tash Sultana.

Indie rock duo Cults will perform for two nights at DC9 on Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1. Tickets are still available for both nights.

Veteran rocker Willie Nile and his band played Vienna’s Jammin Java on Friday on the heels of Thanksgiving. Spirits were already high after the holiday, and Willie and the boys put on a energetic show, filled with new songs and old favorites. Willie may be 70, but he remains youthful and energetic on stage, still brimming with rock ’n’ roll swagger, and he moves like a man half his age.

Baltimore’s own Pigeons Playing Ping Pong performed two shows for their hometown fans this past Friday and Saturday at Rams Head Live! It was a great way to celebrate Thanksgiving weekend!

Over his past three albums, Allen Stone has proven himself as a deeply personal and honest songwriter. On Thanksgiving Eve, Allen Stone gave everyone in attendance at the 9:30 Club a little bit more to be thankful for by turning his sold out show into what felt like an intimate coffee shop performance. The Washington state native exuded a level of comfort as though he were hanging out with just a few of his closest friends, sharing personal stories and life philosophies.

Can abstract soul and hardcore hip hop exist in the same space? It did for a night when the two opposing aesthetics were paired for a show at The Fillmore Silver Spring. Brooklyn hip-hop soul band Phony Ppl opened for gangster rapper Pusha T on Nov. 21, allowing Phony Ppl to capitalize on the buzz from their latest album mō’zā-ik (2018) and expand their fan base.
