Nick Valensi of The Strokes has a new band CRX, and they dropped their debut album only a few short weeks ago. New Skin, released by Columbia, was produced by Josh Homme of Queens of The Stone Age (who also did some great work with Iggy Pop recently).

CRX are touring in support of the album, and they visit U Street Music Hall on Wednesday, Nov. 16. (That’s tomorrow!) Their sound definitely has echoes of garage rock of The Strokes, but it takes a life of its own as a sort of hard power pop.

Check it out for yourself, and watch the official music video for “Ways to Fake It” by CRX on YouTube:

With the band based in Los Angeles, Nick on vocals and guitar is joined by Ralph Alexander (drums), Richie Follin (guitar, keyboard, backing vocals), Jon Safley (bass), and Darian Zahedi (guitar, backing vocals). The gents cite The Cars, Cheap Trick, and Elvis Costello as influences, according to Wikipedia. (I think you can certainly hear that!)

Streets of Laredo and The Gloomies open for CRX. Tickets are available online.

Don’t Miss: The Big Moon @ DC9, 11/25/16

London quartet The Big Moon have been playing a raucous cover version of Madonna’s “Beautiful Stranger” in their live shows, which really showcases their style: Big loud guitars paired buzzing around the airy voice of vocalist Juliette Jackson.

It sounds like this:

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/280933461″ params=”auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false&visual=true” width=”100%” height=”450″ iframe=”true” /]

The Big Moon is made up of four women who were inspired by bands like the Palma Violets to stand up and start making music. They performed once in the United States at CMJ 2015 after getting started, but now they are coming back for a tour of their own to open for The Japanese House. The tour lands locally at DC9 on Friday, Nov. 25.

The band appear as Barbie dolls in the NSFW video for their latest single “Silent Movie Susie,” which also showcases the band’s sense of humor.

Watch the official music video for “Silent Movie Susie” by The Big Moon on YouTube:

The Big Moon have been tearing up stages with their energetic live show. The band has not yet released a full-length album, although they’ve been dropping singles, including most recently “Silent Movie Susie” and “Cupid” via Fiction Records. So this is a fantastic opportunity to see what the buzz is all about.

If you have tickets for the DC9 show, get there early to see The Big Moon! If you don’t have tickets, alas, the show is sold out.

The Pet Shop Boys have a terrific new album, and they toured it in style at the Warner Theatre on Friday.

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe brought the songs from SUPER to DC as part of a talented five-piece band that relied heavily on fine musicianship over stage trappings. In previous tours, the Pet Shop Boys presented us with some dazzling stagecraft and dancers. But this time around, their focus was more toward singing some great songs and playing some great synths accompanied by some costume changes and an admittedly spectacular lightshow.

Seu Jorge was home in Brazil, and he received a phone call that would change the direction of his life.

His ex-wife (an apparently amazing woman who suggested Seu take to the road this year) initially took the call, and she told Seu that the caller had a movie offer for him.

Once on the phone, Wes Anderson asked Seu, “Do you know David Bowie?”

“Oh yeah, he’s the blonde guy! He has the two different colored eyes!” said Seu.

Music Park: Dilly Dally @ Echostage — 11/9/16

Dilly Dally, a Canadian rock band from Toronto, opened the Grouplove show at Echostage to a rather somber post-election faction.

Everyone looked like they just found out their dog died…indeed if I had counted all the times someone voiced their displeasure from the bands (Muna was also opening) or from the audience, I’d have no time to watch the show!

So, as a much needed distraction, we were gifted live music. Lots of music.

The Shirelles had a string of great hits in the ’60s as one of America’s leading girl groups, yielding such classics as “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “Tonight’s the Night.”

Today, original Shirelle Beverly Lee leads a trio that captures the forlorn soul and uplifting doo-wop harmonies. The Shirelles are visiting Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club tomorrow for a Salute to the Troops on Veterans Day!

As a reader of Parklife DC, you can use a 50% off code when buying your ticket. Simply enter code VETBBJ in the “Promo Code” box when you are on the ticket purchasing page.

As an added bonus, the Shirelles are bringing another trio along with them — the legendary Leonard, Coleman, and Blunt, formerly of The Temptations, The Platters and The Drifters. DC native sons Glenn Leonard, Joe Coleman, and Joe Blunt have served as lead singers in those iconic vocal groups, crooning songs like “Every Ready Love” by The Temptations, “Only You” by The Platters, and “Under the Boardwalk” by The Drifters.

Tickets are available online (and don’t forget the 50% off discount code VETBBJ)!

Don’t Miss: The Fray @ The Fillmore Silver Spring, 11/15/16

Denver rock band The Fray will always be beloved for their mid-aughties singles “Over My Head (Cable Car)” and “How To Save A Life” from their debut album.

If you didn’t get acquainted with the rest of their output, The Fray have made it easy for you to catch up, as last Friday they released a compilation package, Through the Years: The Best of The Fray, via Epic Records.

Through the Years contains 12 tracks covering greatest hits in chronological order, but then also delivers the treat of three new songs from the soulful rockers.

Listen to “Singing Low,” one of the new songs from Through the Years, by The Fray via YouTube:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oq9LwYxR38]

Isaac Slade (vocals, piano), Joe King (guitar, vocals), Ben Wysocki (drums), and David Welsh (guitar) are touring in support of the greatest hits package, and they arrive locally at The Fillmore Silver Spring on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

The Fray have released all four of their studio albums via Epic Records, including their latest Helios in 2014. (On that album, they worked with one of my favorite producers ever — Stuart Price, who has done great work with Madonna and The Killers.)

You may also recall hits from The Fray like “You Found Me” and “Never Say Never” from their second album. Needless to say, this will be an “epic” night of power ballads and soul searching, and you’re sure to sing your heart out as the band plays all of the songs you know and love from them.

Tickets are available online.

Don’t Miss: Dragonette @ U Street Music Hall, 12/9/16

Dragonette
Dragonette (Photo by Gabe Ayala)

Synthpoppers Dragonette are about to release their fourth album “Royal Blues” this Friday, Nov. 11, via their own Dragonette Inc. label. And the Toronto trio have launched a tour in support of it.

Dragonette are no strangers to DC, where they have performed frequently since the release of their 2007 debut album, Galore. They visited U Street Music Hall in November of last year, and they are set to return there on this tour with a show on Friday, Dec. 9.

After two albums of fantastic new wave music, Dragonette started to lean more into house, inspired (I’ve long said) by their collaborations with well-regarded DJs — most notably Martin Solveig, who guided them into the 2010 hit “Hello.” Their third album, 2012’s Bodyparts, certainly favored electronic beats over guitar, a trend that continues on new songs like “Darth Vader.”

Listen to “Darth Vader” by Dragonette on Soundcloud:

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/290414930″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

All the same, vocalist Martina Sorbara, bassist Dan Kurtz, and drummer Joel Stouffer always deliver a terrific, high-energy show. Martina’s fantastic voice and frenetic dancing make for a great performance, but Dan’s extraordinary turns on the synthesizer truly take Dragonette to the next level.

This is certainly a show worth seeing! Tickets are available online.
