Michael Blume can be described in many ways — singer, rapper, activist, but never boring. The New Jersey native was in DC recently to entertain and inform a packed Union Stage crowd. The Yale graduate used the platform to deliver his style of R&B and rap with a dose of progressive commentary.

You hope that with any band, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. But when you start with amazing individual parts, the expectations can get quite high. Fortunately, with prog-metal supergroup, Sons of Apollo, those expectations were not only met but exceeded in a thrilling show at the Howard Theatre on Sunday.

Lawrence, the eight-piece band led by siblings Clyde Lawrence and Gracie Lawrence, kicked off their “New Stuff Tour” last Thursday at Union Stage. It was the group’s first time performing in DC, and Gracie’s first performance as a 21 year old.

Fleet Foxes made its return last year with the release and subsequent tour for Crack-Up (Nonesuch Records). The record is filled with the same self-reflective lyrics, swelling music, and gorgeous harmonies as the band’s previous two records, but it seems like a more focused record. After six years between Helplessness Blues and the new LP, it’s a refreshed welcome home for this band whose debut album turns 10 years old as of this writing.

Beneath a flood of red light, Jonathan Davis, best known for being the lead singer of Korn, brought his performance to The Fillmore Silver Spring. One week in advance of the release of his new solo album, Black Labyrinth, Jonathan and his band performed the new album nearly in its entirety.

The energetic performance of The Claudettes at Hill Country Live on Thursday defied the heavy hearts of its members as drummer Danny Yost lay home in Chicago, recuperating after suffering a stroke one week prior. Stepping into Danny’s seat behind the drums was Michael Caskey, who co-founded The Claudettes in 2011 with pianist Johnny Iguana but departed in 2016 due to other commitments.
