It’s little wonder that Philadelphia has declared this week David Bowie Week, as Bowie recorded Young Americans at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia in 1974.

Enthusiastic teenagers who became known as The Sigma Kids lurked outside the studio and occasionally accompanied Bowie during the making of the album, and some of them who still live in Philadelphia have coordinated a week of events for the period that includes Bowie’s 70th birthday and the first anniversary of his death this week. You can find out more at http://www.phillylovesbowie.com.

Here in DC, we’re not quite as organized but we do have a number of Bowie events occurring over the next week.

“Did you get your smoked salmon and your caviar? Or is anybody hungry?” roared Simon LeBon, introducing “Hungry Like the Wolf” by Duran Duran on New Year’s Eve.

Booked for a special weekend of shows on New Year’s Eve and then New Year’s Day 2017, Duran Duran fed a ravenous sold-out crowd song after song at The Theater at MGM National Harbor Saturday, fielding one of the very first concerts in the brand new casino and entertainment complex on the cusp of DC city limits in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

David Bowie would have turned 70 on Jan. 8, so this is a perfect opportunity to come out and salute the music icon. (Our own DJ dance party — Careless Memories: Happy Birthday, David Bowie — follows shortly after at Dodge City on Thursday, Jan. 12!)
