Parklife DC today announces the best in DC concerts with our annual awards program, named for our mascot, DC’s own state bird — the Wood Thrush. Our Thrushie Awards salute bands and venues in line with our mission to review live music concerts.
Congratulations to the 2019 Thrushie Awards winners, several of whom took their top spots from polling ran by Parklife DC over the first half of December.
Live Review: Los Lobos @ City Winery — 12/13/19

Touring behind their new holiday album, Llegó Navidad, Los Lobos played new tunes and old classics — with the band’s two sets covering territory from traditional Latin music to roots rock in a two-night stand at City Winery recently. They ended their show, as is their custom, with the Dead’s “Bertha,” which they introduced with the line “I’m gonna tell you how it’s gonna be,” from Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away.”

Although surely accustomed to the cold, Chicago’s Twin Peaks received a fiercely warm welcome on this sub-30 degree night recently in our nation’s capital. The 5-piece rock band delighted the nearly sold-out room at Black Cat, showcasing a wide range of musical styles and catchy tunes, not to mention some heavy guitar petting.

It’s hard to think we’re nearing the end of 2019. I don’t realize how much has happened throughout the year until I look back and get that “Holy Cow! That was this year?” feeling. And I’ve been experiencing a lot of those lately.

DC post-punk group Priests will go on permanent hiatus, the band announced on Facebook today. Priests will perform one last show at Rough Trade NYC on New Year’s Eve.

Pants, elevators, and Devendra Banhart were the main themes of the night at the 9:30 Club recently. The American-Venezuelan songwriter filled the venue with heartfelt songs and one-liners to the crowd.
