The first time I saw Karen Jonas and her musical partner, Tim Bray, perform was at Gypsy Sally’s in 2015. I had the pleasure of seeing the duo with Karen’s band again recently at Pearl Street Warehouse on the night she won the 2019 Wammy Award for Best Country/Americana Artist.

The Record Exchange has been a part of Silver Spring in one form or another for over 20 years. More than just a place to buy quality vinyl records, the store focuses on buying, selling, and trading multiple formats of music, movies, and video games.

If you like really good music, you probably already know Adrian Belew. But if somehow you didn’t, I would tell you that not only did he perform with the likes of David Bowie, Frank Zappa, and the Talking Heads, but he distinguished himself mightily while doing so. The affable talent released a new solo album, Pop Sided, recently, and he performs at City Winery on Wednesday, April 10.

In the mid-‘70s, young William Michael Albert Broad started life as a musician in his punk band Generation X. As a fan of the Sex Pistols, he famously hung out with a group of punks called the Bromley Contingent.

As Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp once said, the Sex Pistols were made to fade away. By contrast, the man who would become Billy Idol was built to last.

The MusicianShip, a nonprofit dedicated to providing music education to DC youth, sponsored its first Wammie Awards, recently choosing “the best of the best” among DC musicians for recognition to continue the mission of the dissolved Washington Area Music Association.

As editor of Parklife DC, I was a judge and a presenter for the 2019 Wammie Awards at the Lincoln Theatre on March 31, and I’m pleased to provide the full list of winners.
