Esperanza Spalding put a spell on DC’s Lincoln Theatre recently — 12 spells to be exact. The four-time Grammy award-winning bassist and vocalist spent an evening weaving incantations from her recently released album, 12 Little Spells.

New York duo Cults, consisting of Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin, played at DC9 for two nights — and with both nights selling out, the performance made for a packed, exciting show.

Downtempo duo Thievery Corporation formed at the height of lounge culture in the mid ‘90s but Rob Garza and Eric Hilton make music perhaps even more powerful and relevant to our increasingly interconnected world today. Thievery Corporation are now coming home for a three-night run at 9:30 Club. While the first two nights have sold out, tickets are still available for the show on Saturday, Dec. 15.

Soccer Mommy is on fire. With a debut full length album, Clean (Fat Possum Records), on several best of 2018 lists, a string of sold-out tour dates through next year, and loads of positive press coverage, Sophie Allison’s band showed up at the Black Cat on Saturday night ready to set the sold-out house ablaze.

No offense to the National Symphony Orchestra, but The BSO has got way mo’ boogie than the NSO. The BSO, or The Brian Setzer Orchestra, was in town for their 15th Annual Christmas Rocks tour recently at The Anthem.

In 2017, electronic violinist Lindsey Stirling released Warmer in the Winter, her first holiday album, via Lindseystomp Music/Concord Records. This year, Lindsey followed that up with a deluxe edition of the album with five new songs. Once again, Lindsey has embarked on The Wanderland Tour over the holidays, and she performs at The Anthem on Friday, Dec. 14.

Project Hera is an endeavor born from a deep passion of women in music. Headed by DC music scene veteran Cathy DiToro (The Legwarmers, Party Like It’s, and So Fetch), the non-profit group dedicates itself to building and strengthening the local music community, while providing a safe and encouraging outlet for women and young girls.
At Pearl Street Warehouse on Sunday, Dec. 9, Project Hera will present Women Who Rock: A Tribute to the ‘90s with 30 local female artists.
