Lake Street Dive kicked off 2019 on the right foot recently with a sold-out show at Baltimore’s Rams Head Live. The show continued the band’s successful Free Yourself Up Tour, begun last summer in support of its most recent album of the same name, released in May 2018 via Nonesuch Records.

Many identify bluegrass music with the classic bluegrass music of Bill Monroe, or Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt. While that represents the roots of bluegrass, the music has evolved, even developing into distinct styles. At City Winery DC, the John Jorgenson Bluegrass Band, J2B2, recently gave a virtuosic performance of progressive bluegrass.

The godfather of Americana music is coming to DC metro to perform in at the Institute of Musical Traditions in Rockville, Maryland. Kieran Kane will perform with prodigious fiddler Rayna Gellert in what is sure to be a show to remember at the School of Musical Traditions on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Trombone Shorty Heats Up New Years Eve at The Anthem

Coming from one of America’s great musical cities, Austin, Texas, The Band of Heathens played on New Year’s Eve at Hill Country BBQ. Formed in 2008, the BoH mixes Americana influences with roots rock. On their most recent project, A Message from the People Revisited, they journey into soul, gospel, and R&B.

On Jan. 25, Leyla McCalla will release The Capitalist Blues, her third studio album, via PIAS. On the road to that release, the singer-songwriter will bring her protest songs to The Hamilton Live on Friday, Jan. 11.

David Wax Museum brought the band’s border-crossing, world-spiced Mexo-Americana party to the Union Stage in DC with barely 24 hours left in the year. The core (and married) duo of David Wax and Suz Slezak took to the stage with percussionist/ trumpeter Danilo Henriquez and bassist Ben Kogan, warming the audience on this December night, smiles beaming like spring flowers around the whole club, stage to bar.
