Don’t Miss: The Go-Go’s @ Warner Theatre, 8/5/16

It was 1996. I had recently relocted to DC, and I was digging through the stacks of discs at CDepot in College Park, Md., for a specific prize. I heard The Go-Go’s had released a new single in the previous years when I was at sea, and I was determined to add it to my collection.

The Go-Go’s! Isolated from commercial radio for a bit in the early to mid-’90s, I had missed out on the introduction of Britpop to US shores, and I previously hadn’t found many personal favorites among grunge musicians. But with the five ladies from Los Angeles, I knew I would find fantastic new wave tunes to reignite my collecting passions.

Sometimes bands take up bold shifts, trading guitars for synthesizers and producing a different sort of album, and the resulting songs may galvanize fans. If you’re Kristin Gundred, however, you don’t take an old band in a new direction, you simply whip up a new identity.

And so Kristin has at least temporarily shifted her attention from the noisepop quartet Dum Dum Girls, where she was known as Dee Dee, to the shiny new wave project Kristin Kontrol. As Kristin Kontrol, she released a new album, X-Communicate, and hit the road on tour as the opening act for post-grunge rockers Garbage — at the personal invitation of frontwoman Shirley Manson.

Across the album X-Communicate, released earlier this year via Sub Pop, Kristin goes for pulsing synths and lush nostalgia similar to some California new wave bands like Missing Persons, Berlin, or The Motels. “X-Communicate” is a driving dance number while “Show Me” is a sweetly romantic torcher.

Watch Kristin Kontrol perform “Smoke Rings” in an orchestral arrangement for Pitchfork TV on YouTube:

Said Kristin of the song, “It was a last minute addition — the record just didn’t feel done to me. I built off the theme of an old song, seeing the opening line (“I blow smoke rings in my lovers’ eyes — it’s a fancy way for me to say goodbye”) play out cinematically in my head… Real string accompaniment for this live performance video seemed obvious. Having grown up playing in orchestras, hearing my song like this was surreal. I was, no joke, moved to tears.”

Kristin Kontrol’s opening tour for Garbage comes to DC on Wednesday, August 3 at the Lincoln Theatre.

Tickets are available online.

Music Park: Technophobia @ Black Cat — 7/17/16

Technophobia 16 Technophobia perform at the Black Cat on Sunday, July 17. (Photo by Mickey McCarter)

Dark electronic duo Technophobia swept up a bustling crowd and then scattered them in a swirling synth smackdown on Sunday night during a record release party at the Black Cat.

Now available, the Technophobia debut LP, Flicker Out, is a 10-song album that covers quite a lot of ground. My personal favorites on the album are songs like “The Principle” with its soaring vocals and crashing synths. (I keep anticipating the song to break out in Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love” but that’s because it has that sort of catchy interplay between vocals and instruments.)

She’s a little bit folky and a little bit punky. And she’s written hits for others like Rihanna “Cheers (Drink to That).”

Her name is LP (born Laura Pergolizzi), and she has three LPs of her own under her belt. Now, LP is touring from Los Angeles opening for English glam icon Bryan Ferry, and she comes to DC with Bryan on Saturday, July 23, and Monday, July 25, to open for him at the Lincoln Theatre prior to playing a solo headlining show at U Street Music Hall on Tuesday, July 26.

And LP arrives with new music in the form of a spaghetti-western inspired ballad “Lost on You,” which appears on a new EP, Death Valley, released June 17 on Vagrant Records. The EP was smartly produced by Mike Del Rio from Republic Records’ duo POWERS.

In songs like “Lost on You,” LP hits her stride with her powerful, longing voice coupled in the video with her cinematic sensibilities. (Bryan Ferry surely is proud to have an appropriate tourmate!)

“Lost on You” hit #3 on Hype Machine’s Popular Chart, and landed #6 on Spotify’s Viral Chart in its debut week. Internationally, “Lost on You” just hit #1 in Greece and #2 in Portugal. So if you suspect good music might be lurking on foreign music charts, you may be right!

Tickets for LP’s headlining performance at U Street Music Hall are available online. Tickets for her show opening for Bryan Ferry are available on Monday, July 25, also online.

Stars and Bars: Quick Take @ Fare Well

Vegan PierogisVegan Pierogis from Fare Well

I’m definitely not vegan. Nor much of a vegetarian for that matter (though I did sleep at a Holiday Inn once).

Near to my office and home, a new vegan bakery/diner/bar concept opened in June. Fare Well – from the makers of Sticky Fingers Bakery – certainly knows how to create good dishes with only vegetable products.

From my limited experience with vegan cuisine, mostly because I think it will taste bland or strange, I must say the food I’ve had at Fare Well so far is good. I won’t completely switch to vegan anytime soon, but good things can happen when a chef is dedicated to finding the best tastes from a particular set of ingredients.

It’s nice to see that within this approach to food, there are places in DC where it is worthwhile.

So far, I’ve tried the Chilaquiles Verdes and the Pierogis. I will need to try the bakery items next!

Don’t Miss: Esmé Patterson @ 9:30 Club, 7/21/16

Folk pop chanteuse Esmé Patterson released We Were Wild, her third solo album via Grand Jury Music last month, and she’s visiting the 9:30 Club on Thursday, July 21, to perform songs from the new album as opener for Brett Dennen.

The spirited singer spun off from Denver collective Paper Bird once she had a few of her own albums on her resume, and her latest effort is a pleasing, perky collection of songs that showcase her easygoing manners. As with new single “Feel Right,” Esmé often sings reflective numbers on hitting your stride and finding your space in matters of life and love.

Watch the official music video for “Feel Right” by Esmé Patterson on YouTube:

Esmé’s first album, All Princes, I, appeared in 2012, and her second, Woman to Woman, in 2014. The prolific siren keeps the pace steady on the new album, combining a little bit of psych rock with a little bit of roots music and a whole lot of spirit.

Again, Esmé is opening for Northern California folk singer Brett Dennen, so get to the club early to catch her! Tickets are available online.

Come down to the DC (Gallaudet) Pavilion near Union Market for the International Colombian Festival. Colombian music, dancing, art and plenty of tasty food!

The festival will feature a series of bands from Colombia and a beauty pageant.

If it gets anything like Parque Lleras in Medellín, it should be a good time. If the food is anything like bandeja paisa, it should be amazing.
