Sports Park: D.C. United vs. New York Red Bulls @ RFK Stadium, 5/13/16

D.C.-United---May-13

Season Record: 2-4-4 (10 points)

Your D.C. United were not inspired last Sunday, dropping a 2-0 game to NYC FC. Maybe they were too busy planning out gifts to give to their mothers.

The next home game is this Friday, May 13th, against the New York Red Bulls (the worst nickname in sports). The Red Bulls and United are tied for the 6th place spot in the Eastern Conference, so something has to give. Actually, I predict a draw.

In addition to soccer, this will be Star Wars night. Dress up! Get the force with you!

Audacious Assertion: Draw: United 1, Red Bulls 1

Don’t Miss: VÉRITÉ @ Rock and Roll Hotel, 5/15/16

Brooklyn electropop chanteuse Kelsey Byrne, aka VÉRITÉ, has released a new EP and she’s launching a tour at the Rock and Roll Hotel on Sunday, May 15.

The new five-track EP Living, released on May 6, pairs VÉRITÉ with a host of producers, including Stefan Graslund (Charli XCX), Tim Anderson (BANKS), and Peter Thomas (Betty Who). All of the songs, particularly the lead single “Constant Crush,” serve as strong showcases for VÉRITÉ’s sweeping voice and a fondness for putting unconventional twists in her soaring oohs and aahs.

Listen to the Living EP via Soundcloud:

Previously, VÉRITÉ has released two well-received EPs — Echo and Sentiment. In commenting on the process behind the new EP, VÉRITÉ released the following statement:

“Living was written in the wake of ‘Sentiment’ and after the first tour. It was the first time I had been able to dedicate all of my time to the project and writing. If I’m being honest, it was really uncomfortable and oddly exhausting and forced me to over analyze my writing and process in a way I wasn’t used to. The EP takes these tiny moments and magnifies and over analyzes them until they are unrecognizable. The idea was to present an unadulterated look into how my mind works.

“Sonically, I tried to elevate and push away from what is traditionally ‘alternative electro pop’ or whatever labels I had been associated with. I worked with a different producer for each song, which in the beginning was unintentional but became a challenge. The goal was to tie in those conflicting perspectives to sound like one cohesive voice. Ultimately this started as an experiment in how to deal with and interact with time. Hoping that people can resonate with it in any way.”

Tickets are available online.

Music Park: Born Ruffians @ Rock and Roll Hotel — 5/3/16

Born Ruffians 25

The Born Ruffians descended on the Rock and Roll Hotel on May 3rd, and they want to thank you very much. Sorry, not really. They actually want you to eat shit, because they did it. And by “it”, they surely mean played an epic rock concert to the adoring fans. They did it and we were there with our shit-eating grins.

Touring for their fourth album, RUFF, the Born Ruffians were fully up to the task of rousing the decent sized crowd to dance and sing along. Those who braved their performance, a mere six months after their last appearance at the Rock and Roll Hotel, were rewarded with song after song brimming with memorable hooks and melodies, laden with a heavy dose of punk attitude.

Music Park: James Supercave @ Black Cat — 5/1/16

James Supercave 02 Joaquin Pastor and Andrés Villalobos of James Supercave perform at the Black Cat on Sunday, May 1, 2016.

You could see it on the faces of the audience as you looked around: What they were hearing was really damn good.

Neo-psych band James Supercave caught lightning in a bottle with their phenomenal song “Better Strange,” and unleashed it on the very full house at the Black Cat on Sunday night.

As people were walking into the venue to see Wild Belle, they may have been greeted with an opening act unfamiliar to them. After that opening song (the title track to the band’s debut album), the crowd definitely wanted to hear more.

Interview: Cyndi Lauper (@ Wolf Trap, 6/1/16)

The inimitable Cyndi Lauper will soon launch a tour in support of her new album, Detour, a collection of covers of country songs, due out this Friday, May 6, via Sire Records.

For seven dates on that tour, including a stop at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Va., on Wednesday, June 1, Cyndi will share a stage with another icon of pop music in the 1980s — Boy George, lead singer of Culture Club.

Earlier this week, Cyndi held a telephone press conference with several music and arts reporters to chat about her new album and the tour. The following transcript has been edited for brevity and focus.

Q: Can you tell us how you came to record an album of country classics?

Cyndi Lauper: These covers and this time in country music are very closely linked to R&B, which is very closely linked to the birth of rock and roll. So it’s the foundation of everything I sing. When I was a kid, these songs were pop songs — Patsy Cline was on the radio, Loretta Lynn was on the radio. We had three radio stations! They were on the radio.

Sports Park: D.C. United vs. New York City FC @ RFK Stadium, 5/8/16

UnitedvNYFC

Season Record: 2-4-3 (10 points)

After a win against New England at home and a draw on the road against Chicago, your D.C. United have moved up to 5th place.

They next play New York City FC this Sunday. Both squads are tied with the exact same record.

Fabian Espindola and Álvaro Saborio lead the team with three goals each. I predict they both net a goal this Sunday!

D.C. United are riding high, so they should have no problem taking down New York.

Get your tickets here. Get them now!
