Looking for a place to be on Valentine’s Day? A place that is fun, laidback, and carefree?

Do you like rock ‘n’ roll? And rhythm-and-blues?

Then you have to come hang out with us at Chad America’s 17th Annual Valentine’s Day Rock & Roll Dance Party on Sunday, Feb. 14, at the Black Cat.

Your host Chad America, the legendary Black Cat bartender, takes over the Red Room of the Black Cat for a high-spirited but low-hassle dance party as he gets out from behind the bar and in behind the turntables. He is joined by DJs from popular events such as Shout Bamalama (Baby Alcatraz), Party Lights (Mad Squirrel), and Big Bad City (Soul Call Paul)!

“We strive for a party that’s equally fun for everyone. It’s a good time if you’re solo, with a group of friends, or with a date,” Chad told Parklife DC.

So come alone or bring a date for this event, which is always a guaranteed good time. As a bonus, federal employees are off work Monday, Feb. 15, for Washington’s Birthday, so you can keep the celebration going late or drop by after dinner.

Gary Richards was born in DC, and so when the globe-hopping DJ appeared at the 9:30 Club last Wednesday, he turned up with some gents who have known him since he was born.

Clearly exhilarated to be playing a show to a DC crowd, Gary, better known as DESTRUCTO, didn’t waste a lot of time introducing his entourage. Rather, he got down to work spinning some R&B and house tracks.

Among those tracks was his new release, “4 Real,” featuring collaborators Ty Dolla $ign and ILoveMakonnen. As you can tell from this smooth ditty punctuated by minimal instrumentation, DESTRUCTO knows how to produce G-House.

Said DESTRUCTO on Soundcloud: “The second night of HARD Summer 2015, Ty told me he wanted to go back in the studio. He could only do it the next day, So, I went down to his house with Waxy and he just started singing, ‘I’m for real’ ‘I’m for real’ over this beat we had written. I had already spoken to Makonnen about the track, so Ty shouted him out. Makonnen then returned the favor. After we got all the vocals back we were like dam we need to make this track the best it can be. We went back in and re-worked the entire thing. Wax brought in his homie Stylaz Fuego to make it even tighter and 6 months later bang here we go. G-House 2.0.”

HARD Summer 2015, of course, is part of the HARD Events DJ concert series DESTRUCTO founded.

In addition, DESTRUCTO spun other crowd-pleasers like “Where Ya At” by The Future and Drake and “Choices (Yup)” by E-40 to a very full room of kids who danced hard throughout the late-night set. DESTRUCTO couldn’t resist inviting a kid dressed in a monkey costume up to the stage to dance a bit, which led to more people dancing on the stage.

It was clear the crowd didn’t get enough of DESTRUCTO’s style of house, so we’ll likely see him back soon.

Over the weekend, DC cocktail mogul Derek Brown held a soft launch party for his new flagship spirits destination, the Columbia Room (124 Blagden Alley NW, DC).

Starting tomorrow, Feb. 9, the Columbia Room is open to the public! But before you go, Derek kindly provided pictures of the space so that you can orient yourself to the stylish surroundings, sure to inspire many long, intellectual conversations stimulated by the bar’s sophisticated drinks.

Feb. 8 Update: We have been told by Beggars Group that jennylee has canceled her US tour. We hope she reschedules soon, because I am loving this album!

jennylee aka Jenny Lee Lindberg, bassist of dreampop quartet Warpaint, kicked off a solo career last year, dropping her debut album right on! in December via Rough Trade Records.

On the album, the Los Angeles artist demonstrates a lovely, lush voice that pairs well with the agreeably droning ambient pop running through the record’s 10 tracks. Lead singer “Never” is one of the jauntier tracks on the album, smacking of middle period Siouxsie Sioux singing an Echo and the Bunnymen song. Song and video certainly emanate an appealing old school new wave vibe.

More typical of the album’s tracks is the droning “Boom Boom,” which moves at a slightly slower yet still engaging pace.

It appears jennylee’s solo stuff is an excellent complement to the music of Warpaint without being derivative. jennylee takes off in a direction all her own here, and it’s one that should be very satisfying to fans of her band and newcomers to her music.

“It’s a good record for the winter, reflecting long nights, and the search for comfort and safety, the desire to wrap ourselves in layers,” said Pitchfork, which also hailed her voice as “uncluttered and distinct.”

jennylee only first hit the road with her new band in October, and she’s back by a guitarist, bassist and drummer. (Indeed, we are told that Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa is along for the ride!) This is a fantastic opportunity to see them in early days.

Denver experimental rock band Facial and DC post-punkers Den-Mate open for jennylee.

Jessica Louise Dye has a sultry voice well suited to the ’60s vibe radiated by the band High Waisted. She sounds fresh yet acclimated to her surroundings — which makes her ideally suited for surf rock, and the band’s loose, smart sound.

Playing guitar while she sings, Jess brings a lot of energy to the stage but at the same time she fits like an interlocking block with her bandmates — drummer Jono Bernstein, guitarist Steven Nielsen and bassist Jeremy Hansen. Together, the men are also a bit of a contradiction, much like their lead singer. They play wonderfully loose, shimmery beats — but at the same time, they are amazingly sharp.

Shawn Fogel, lead singer of Golden Bloom, confided, “I like this campfire vibe we have, with that raging fire outside.”

Golden Bloom played their album release show at Sehkraft Brewing (in Arlington). A small, but decent crowd circled around the stage at tables as the band performed a mix of new and older songs. Outside in the patio area, there was indeed a bonfire going. Unfortunately, due to the extreme post-Snowzilla cold and snow, you could only dream of sitting next to it.

Golden Bloom’s second full-length album, Searching For Sunlight, is full of songs about searching for love, with breezy pop and folk arrangements. The album was officially released on January 29th (the day after the show), but they did have a few copies on sale for anyone that couldn’t wait.

“Searching for Sunlight”, the title track, is an up-tempo, toe-tapping journey to find the light, in the form of love.

“Books You Never Read” is a slow-building, almost James Taylor-esque, song that wants you to reflect on what you have and not what you might be missing.

Moogfest 2016: Three Acts Not to Miss

Moogfest 2016 is shaping up to be a pretty exciting affair, and I say this after a very successful last edition of the synthesizer-inspired music festival, which I attended in 2014.

This time around, a few of the artists are the same but many of them are quite different. Take for example synthpop icon Gary Numan, who will conduct a three-night residency at Moogfest 2016 in Durham, NC, presumably May 19, 20, and 21. Gary will perform three of his classic albums -– Replicas, The Pleasure Principle, and Telekon -– over three nights.

Washington Capitals Report Card

Fortnightly Record: 1-0-1 (3 pts)
Overall: 35-8-4 (74 pts)

Well not much happened on the Capitals hockey front over the last two weeks. You can thank Snowzilla for that.

The Capitals had to postpone two of their home games, while the rest of DC was busy digging themselves out from under the roughly 20 inches of snow.

It was also the NHL’s All-Star break, so no games were scheduled over the weekend.

The All-Star Game itself took place on Sunday, January 31st, with a new format this year.

The format is a 3-on-3 knock-out Tournament (20 minutes per game), with a team of All-Star players for each of the four Divisions. The winning team receives $1 million to split amongst its players! Nice incentive.

The Capitals’ team, the Metropolitan Division, lost to the Atlantic Division, 4-3 in the first round. The winning team was the Pacific Division, winning 1-0 over the Atlantic Division.

The Caps All-Stars this year were:

1. Nicklas Backstrom
2. Braden Holtby
3. Evgeny Kuznetsov (replaced Alex Ovechkin, since he sat it out to recover from some lingering injuries.)

The Capitals next home game is Tuesday, February 2nd against Florida.

Radiation City, the dreampop quintet from Portland, Ore., aren’t afraid to blend diverse influences into their music, ranging from bossa nova to Northern soul to doo-wop. But the band brought a new sense of urgency to its third full-length album, Synesthetica, scheduled for release on Feb. 12 via Polyvinyl Records.

The principals behind Radiation City confess the band almost broke up, and the founding couple behind the band — vocalist and guitarist Cameron Spies and vocalist and keyboardist Lizzy Ellison — almost ended their relationship.

But they found new life in changing their approach to things and enlisting producer John Vanderslice (known for his work with Spoon and Death Cab for Cutie). The resulting album sounds a bit “otherworldly.”

“We were trying to get to a place where cultural constructs didn’t mean anything,” Spies said. “We wanted to destroy the barriers between all the things we keep separate in our daily lives.”

The lead single, “Juicy,” has a sing-song cadence that occasionally lapses into neo-psychedelia. It’s extremely pleasant on the ears!

The album takes its name from the condition “synesthesia,” which can cause a person to see colors when they hear musical notes, as Lizzy apparently does! Lizzy and Cameron are joined by their bandmates drummer Dasha Shleyeva, drummer Randy Bemrose, and bassist Patti King, and they are hitting DC9 on Monday, Feb. 29 on their tour in support of the new album.
