Micah Gordon of Courtship was excited to open The Wombats at 9:30 Club recently, telling the audience that they’ve been a favorite band of his since he was in eighth grade, when he would hide in his basement at home to listen to them.

So it was certainly the fulfillment of a dream for Los Angeles electropop duo Courtship (often stylized as “courtship.”) to perform in the sold-out show on Monday, Jan. 8, the first stop on a North American tour for The Wombats.

Rostam Batmanglij, best known simply as Rostam, released his debut solo album, titled Half-Light, last year via Nonesuch Records. Rostam launches a North American Tour in Atlanta on Jan. 29, and he arrives in DC a few days later to perform at U Street Music Hall on Thursday, Feb. 1.

In a sold-out show at The Anthem on Wednesday, The Killers reminded us that they hail from Las Vegas — and in Las Vegas, folks know how to put on a big, stupendous show. Frontman Brandon Flowers and company brought it all — great music, neon videos, and gold suits — in support of touring their fifth studio album, the aptly named Wonderful Wonderful.

Chamber poppers Destroyer released ken, their 12th studio album, in October via Merge Records. Destroyer launched a North American tour last night in Portland, Oregon, and the band will visit DC to perform at Black Cat on Sunday, Jan. 28.

Matthew Murphy, vocalist of The Wombats, dedicated “Turn,” his band’s latest single, to his newlywed wife during his show on Monday before launching into the sunny song and its salute to love.

The sold-out audience at 9:30 Club was eager for the new single, and delighted squeals greeted the announcement of the song, which came toward the end of a set where the upbeat UK post-punk trio reminded us that they are a really damn good live act.

The Dead Milkmen released Welcome to the End of the World, a new EP, in October, and they showed up at 9:30 Club in a boistrous show to play songs new and old on Friday, Jan. 5. Paivi was there to shoot the show!

Harlem rapper Dave East, born David Brewster Jr., released Paranoia: A True Story, his debut extended play (EP), last summer via Def Jam Recordings and Mass Appeal Records. He kicks off a tour on Jan. 16 in New York City, and then finds himself at Baltimore Soundstage for a show only a few days later on Jan. 19.

Eric Benét released his self-titled eighth studio album in 2016 via Jordan House and BMG. The R&B superstar continued to tour after the album’s release, and he’s making his way to DC for two dates at The Birchmere on Wednesday, Jan. 17, and Thursday, Jan. 18.

Australian singer-songwriter Jen Cloher released her self-titled fourth album recently via Marathon Artists/Milk! Records. After supporting Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile on tour last year, Jen is returning to DC on a headlining tour with a show at Rock and Roll Hotel on Thursday, Feb. 1.
