The days of the Bone Thugs, Hot Boys, and Triple Six Mafias are long gone, and it’s left a gaping hole in our culture. Today, the search for individual success too often trumps the all-important gang. When did we forget about “all for one and one for all!?” And can we even find our way back? As I reflect on the legacies of these crews, I find hope in three letters: GBC. GothBoiClique gave me that hope in their sold-out show at Milkboy ArtHouse recently.

Mon Laferte came out with so much energy and so much love on her last night of her Gira de Norma Tour. “A que dale todo, ” she said, which translates to “you gotta give it all you got,” as she turned to her band.  She definitely delivered on that promise at The Fillmore Silver Spring recently.

Songs are a funny thing. Some songs you hear and then forget but then you strangely remember them, like in a dream, when you find yourself in situations or places where you may have caught that one riff or that line that reminds you of a place or a person you thought you had forgotten completely. Other songs end up becoming sort of like the soundtrack to your life. I’d have to say that Vampire Weekend over the last 10 years has ended up (willingly or not) creating much of that soundtrack for me.

Nashville all-female rock band Thelma and the Sleaze got some well-deserved exposure recently, opening for Brittany Howard at the 9:30 Club for two nights. By turns, they were hilarious, crude, and brash. Led by their charismatic frontwoman LG, the band also includes Whiskers (guitar), Queenie (bass), Cootchie (keys), and Snowflake (drums). Together, they entertained the sold-out house and laid down some heavy jams.
