Kaoru Ishibashi, known better as Kishi Bashi, released Omoiyari, his fourth full-length studio album, via Joyful Noise Recordings earlier this year. The violinist is on tour with a visit to the Lincoln Theatre in DC on Friday, Nov. 8.

Jenny Scheinman is a highly accomplished violinist and fiddle player, as well as a singer. Her work straddles the worlds of jazz and roots music. In September, she appeared with Robbie Fulks at Jammin Java. On Sunday, she played with Alison Miller’s Parlor Game at the National Gallery of Art.
At the show, Mark Engleson of Parklife DC spoke with Jenny about the range of her work, her musical background growing up, and her influences. They also discussed the experience of being a Jewish artist in the roots music world.

What’s more New Orleans than a crawfish boil and king cake? Bounce music! The uninhibited twist on hip-hop is as beloved in NOLA as Go-Go in the nation’s capital. Freddie Ross, Jr., better known as Big Freedia (pronounced “FREE-da”), recently showed a packed 9:30 Club why he’s the “Queen of Bounce.”

Russian Circles, the Chicago-based and internationally known post-metal power trio, brought its muscular brand of “multi-dimensional dramatic instrumental narratives” (as noted on the band’s website) to Union Stage recenlty. The band is now back on the road supporting its most recent release, Blood Year (Sargent House Records).

Cold wave musician Chris Stewart, best known as the creative force behind Black Marble, released a third Black Marble full-length album, Bigger Than Life, recently via Sacred Bones Records. He’s hitting the road with a date at Black Cat on Sunday, Nov. 24, and you can win tickets to go with Parklife DC.

Canadian rockers The New Pornographers released In the Morse Code of Brake Lights, the band’s eighth studio album, in September via Collected Works Records. The group’s accompany tour takes them to the 9:30 Club, for a sold-out show, and the Lincoln Theatre on Wednesday, Nov. 6!

Ten years ago, Jónsi of Sigur Rós partnered with musician Alex Somers to record an ambient album, Riceboy Sleeps. This year, Jónsi and Alex celebrated a decade of Riceboy Sleeps by taking it on the road with an orchestra in a tour that stopped at the Lincoln Theatre in DC recently. Jason Nicholson shot the show.

You sort of have one or the other and Mississippi John Hurt was a great source of direction, I guess would be the way to put it, because of the beautiful and simple way he used to put the melody over the alternating bass. I mean he just played the melody of the song, and that was like nobody else I had heard, it wasn’t just licks, it was the actual melody. That sort of opened up a whole new thing and because of my interest in Jazz and other types of music that all got added in so when you take that same sort of right hand technique and apply it to a more complex musical approach you end up with something like what I do.” — Bruce Cockburn

Kevin Gates released his sophomore album, I’m Him, in September via Atlantic Records. Several weeks later, he embarked on a 32-date I’m Him Tour, and one stop on that tour was DC’s own Echostage. Chris Castillo shot some pictures of the Baton Rouge rapper.
