R&B singer Lloyd Polite, Jr., known best as simply Lloyd, last year released Tru, his fifth studio album, via Young Goldie Music and Empire Distribution. Lloyd dropped by the Howard Theatre recently for an unplugged show, and Chris Castillo was there to get some pictures.

Noted roots artist David Bromberg appeared in a big band format at the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue recently. His band included a horn section—trumpet, trombone, and sax — and strings — fiddle and banjo. But David honored his roots in the blues — he’s a protégé of the Rev. Gary Davis — growling and howling through numbers like his opener, which I think, was Robert Johnson’s “Walkin’ Blues.”

Ambient quartet Cigarettes After Sex recently performed at 9:30 Club on the very day the band released Cry, their second studio album. Paivi Salonen was there to take photos of all of the slow jams.
Belfast punk legends Stiff Little Fingers visited the Black Cat recently to play through their debut album Inflammable Material and to celebrate 40 years of publishing music. And the Irishmen brought along with them California punks The Avengers for a rousing good evening of rock.

Sleater-Kinney — now the duo of Corin Tucker (vocals and guitar) and Carrie Brownstein (guitar and vocals) — dove right into business in a big show at The Anthem recently, rocking through 11 tracks of the new album, The Center Won’t Hold, and more, beginning with the latest title track. ZZ top is one of the world’s most iconic rock bands. With their Texas-style goatees, sunglasses, hats, and black attire, the 2004 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees are instantly recognizable. But they’re also iconic in the sense that this is a truly great band. They may call themselves “Beer Drinkers and Hellraisers,” but, beneath the image, this a tight group of incredibly talented musicians.
And ZZ Top’s appearance on their 50th Anniversary Tour at MGM National Harbor recently showcased that, after all these years, they’re still the best at the dirty Texas blues-rock.

Angel Olsen released All Mirrors, her fourth studio album, via Jagjaguwar on Oct. 4. She’s performing at the Lincoln Theatre for two nights on Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2. The first night sold out fast, but tickets remain for Angel’s second show.
