Squeeze will perform at The Kennedy Center on Saturday, Aug. 17, as a date on The Difford and Tilbrook Songbook 2019, when the UK legends play their extensive list of hits as well as rare, lesser-known gems from their back catalogue and solo careers.

On Feb. 3, 1959, tragedy struck at the heart of American music. A chartered aircraft crashed in Mason City, Iowa just minutes after takeoff, claiming the lives of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, JP Richardson – “The Big Bopper” – and the pilot, Roger Peterson.

That fateful day inspired singer-songwriter Don McLean to write the song “American Pie,” capturing a loss of innocence, in 1971. The tireless Mr. McLean brings his best-known song and the rest of his catalog to The Birchmere on Friday, April 5.

Drummers are perpetually left in the dark. Which is a little odd because they’re the engines of a band — the driving force, the anchor around which the music is tied. Sometimes, the drummer shines bright despite being pushed to the back of the stage. Such is the case with Isabelle De Leon, the DC-based drummer who cohosts, along with saxophonist Elijah Balbed, the monthly Southwest Soul Sessions at Pearl Street Warehouse.
