The titans of gospel took everyone to church when The Blind Boys of Alabama performed a show at City Winery in DC on Sunday. The Grammy Award winning group put out a 90-minute set which, by the end, had the crowd on its feet, dancing with hands raised, and giving the occasional, “Amen” to the men on the stage.

Whitey Morgan and the 78’s cut a distinctive appearance, one that could mislead audiences, such as those at the band’s recent concert at Rams Head Live. Many of the players in this talented modern-day honky tonk band look like ex-football players gone hippie — big, bulky bodies with long hair and bushy beards.

Babalú! Those of us who’ve reached a certain age, or any fan of “I Love Lucy,” will recognize that famous cry. Ricky Ricardo’s celebrated signature song introduced countless Americans to Cuban music and culture. Desi Arnaz, who played the television show’s Cuban band leader, had already made “Babalú” an established musical number for his orchestra in the 1940s.

Wide-brimmed hat and beard, smooth voice and introspection, it’d be easy to mistake Casey Cavanagh for just another folk rocker hoping to catch the Americana wave. It’d be just that, though — a mistake. I chatted with Casey to learn more about the man in advance of his recent show at Hill Country in DC.

At sold-out Lincoln Theater recently, José González and The String Theory delivered an amazing performance. It was a real treat to have seen a full ensemble of instruments with the vocals of José González to give it magical touch.

The timing of the Sisters of Strawberry Moon Tour seems a little odd. The supergroup’s album, Solstice, doesn’t come out until two days after they finished their tour recently at City Winery DC. But supergroups have fickle natures.

In February, folk trio Mountain Man released a new digital single, covering John Denver! “We love John Denver so much we gave Alex his haircut, and recorded a few of his legendary tunes too,” the band says. Perhaps they will play the songs, “Take Me Home, Country Roads” and “Around and Around,” in their appearance at The Barns at Wolf Trap on Friday, March 29.
