All Things Go Fall Classic was held at Union Market over last weekend, and the Saturday line-up was a noteworthy one because it was an all-women affair. It was a special day to attend to catch the amazing voices in general, but to see women represented like no one has in seen at music festivals it quite remarkable. Maggie Rogers and Liz Plapinger (aka LPX) co-curated the Saturday lineup, and both made sure that the lineup represented women from all genres of the music industry. From rock to R&B to pop, there was something for everybody.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Bonnie “Prince” Billy. Will Oldham, who has also released music under the Palace moniker (Palace Brothers, Palace Music, and Palace Songs), is something of a cult figure. He also has a varied acting career, with appearances in films ranging from Jackass 3D to 2006’s Junebug to last year’s A Ghost Story. On Tuesday, he made an appearance at The Birchmere, and I was there to figure him out.

Dave Grohl called them “the best opening band we’ve ever had.” That’s high praise, and something The Struts may never hear again if they continue performing with as much incredible excitement as they did at the 9:30 Club on Monday. Currently on their own headlining tour of America in support of their soon-to-be-released second full-length album, Young & Dangerous, The Struts danced and sang the night away. (Hey, check out our Parklife DC review of The Struts opening Foo Fighters at The Anthem’s grand opening in 2017!)

Some bands possess a bevy of talent and personality which cannot be fully appreciated unless seen live. DC-based Black Masala is such a band. The Balkan- and funk-inspired brass band recently put on an energy-packed raucous performance at Pearl Street Warehouse, one of the cozy new live music venues at The Wharf in Southwest DC.

Knoxville Americana band The Black Lillies play a unique mix of genres of styles: country, bluegrass, blues, and jazz. You might say that The Black Lillies are a CBGB+ band. Touring in support of a new album, Stranger to Me, The Lillies put on a compelling show at The Hamilton on Saturday that saw the audience fill the pit, dancing to the infectious rhythms.

Grammy award-winning R&B singer-songwriter Maxwell made a recent stop at The Theater at MGM National Harbor as part of the 50 Intimate Nights Live Tour. It has been over 20 years since the release of his debut album, Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite (1996), but the silky soul singer showed that he’s still got it!

Maxwell, along with artists like Erykah Badu and D’Angelo, have been credited as the originators of neo-soul. The genre that dominated the late ‘90s and early aughts incorporated jazz, funk, and hip-hop into a contemporary R&B sound.
