When you first see the name “Marian Hill,” you may think of one person? But we invite you to think of two — keyboardist Jeremy Lloyd and singer Samantha Gongol, who formed a band called Marian Hill, lifting the first and last names from different characters in The Music Man.

Regardless of what else you might remember, know that Marian Hill will release Unusual, their second studio album, on May 11. And they will perform at 9:30 Club on May 9 on their Unusual Tour. You can win tickets to see them with Parklife DC.

Lookman Adekunle Salami (who goes by the name LA Salami) is a poet and an artist that happens to make great music. He’s like a punk rock poet but even that doesn’t do what he does justice. In fact, trying to nail down who LA Salami is can be an exercise in futility. One thing is clear, however — LA Salami creates captivating art. He displayed some of that art in a sold-out show at DC9 on Saturday.

Editor’s note: Parklife DC was glad to receive word Friday that the fifth annual Funk Parade will proceed on Saturday, May 12, after being rescued by a massive-last minute fundraising effort. We present the official press release from Funk Parade in its entirety below. Visit www.funkparade.com for all details!

Washington, DC — It’s on.

The 5th Annual Funk Parade will happen Saturday, May 12, after last-minute fundraising raised over $60,000 in just a few weeks. Organizers had announced March 6 the event was unlikely to take place because of a massive budget shortfall.

Though not even on tour, Third Eye Blind came to The Anthem to headline the DC 101 Blossom Bash. (Editor: Chris Smyth snapped the band in action during the sold-out show! Bush headlined; check out our Parklife DC review of Bush.)

From the start, it felt as if Bush lead singer Gavin Rossdale wanted to get as close to the audience as possible. He stalked around the stage like a caged animal who wanted out.

When the band played the number “Greedy Fly” — from second album Razorblade Suitcase, Gavin climbed down from the stage and jumped up on the security barrier so that he could play right in front of the crowd. But that was just a precursor for what was to come at a sold-out show at The Anthem on Friday.

What’s a band to do when their friends Ought are in town from Montreal? Why perform with them of course. But if you are DC’s own Priests, you may not want to steal any thunder, so you might perform under a pseudonym.

So Priests performed incognito as “Religious Figures,” opening Ought at Black Cat on Wednesday. (See our Parklife DC review of Ought!)

Touring a sophisticated new album, Montreal post-punks Ought added a hint of glam to their nervous energy for a winning performance at Black Cat on Wednesday.

The sentiment in ZZ Top‘s 1983 hit is just as applicable today in 2018 as it was 35 years ago: “‘Cause every girl crazy ’bout a sharp dressed man.”

District ladies (and many a gentleman) know a thing or two about fashion and one fan in particular wasn’t shy about applauding the lead singer’s tailored, red three-piece ensemble. “Mr. Hammond — nice suit!”

Albert Hammond Jr. quickly responded: “In fact, it is!” The audience later learned, after witnessing the musician engage in nearly 40 minutes of  of onstage cardio in that recent performance at U Street Music Hall, “Wool does not sweat well.”
