Anyone who watches late-night television likely knows Jon Batiste. He and his band, Stay Human, are the house band on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The band paid a visit to DC recently to perform as a headline act at The Anthem during the 15th annual DC JazzFest.

We’ve seen Brandi Carlile before, we’ve walked the very same steps at Merriweather Post Pavilion, sat under the same stars, even heard some of the same songs. But no part of us could prepare for the joy-letting, the rampant release of emotion, the impossible catharsis, and the absolute connectedness of this recent show.

Hailing from the depths of Phoenix, Arizona, Spirit Adrift are making their way through the United States with High Command and Haunt. I caught them recently at their DC date, held at Songbyrd Music House, a venue that is part record store, part concert hall.

Phish hit the road for the summer on a 26-date tour that culminates with the band’s traditional Labor Day run of shows in Commerce City, Colorodo. Along the way, guitarist Trey Anastasio and company stop at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Saturday, June 22, and there are very few seats remaining!

Darrell Scott is a master songwriter: Travis Tritt and the Dixie Chicks have taken his songs to the Country Top 5, he’s been voted Nashville Songwriter of the Year, and he’s received a Grammy nomination for Best Country Song.
But Darrell also has the blues deep down inside his body, his bones, his heart, and his soul. Not the kind of blues you have when you’re sad. This kind of the blues that is the fire in the belly of all American music. It is seductive danger and gentle love, the harsh growl of the wolf of the door and the tender croon of the father’s lullaby at the baby’s cradle. And it all came out at a recent show at AMP by Strathmore.

Evan Dando, the creative force and songwriter behind The Lemonheads, has written some brilliant songs. In fact, they are some of the most hook-laden creations ever put to vinyl from the late ’80’s to mid-90’s. And in 2003 his solo album, Baby I’m Bored, has one of my favorite songs, “Hard Drive,” that’s even more moving when you see him perform the song alone with only a guitar being the only accompaniment. He would do exactly that at a recent show at 9:30 Club.
