Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone, one of my favorite music and cultural commentators, described New Order as “goth-disco kingpins” in his review of a New York City performance in 2016.

Some bands simply exude fun and bring with them a visceral cool that infects those in the audience, and on this late-summer (it was still a balmy 90 degrees outside) Saturday night, Jay Som brought with them a much needed chill.

Brooklyn emo band Rainer Maria released five studio albums and then apparently called it a day in 2006. It is a pleasant surprise then that the emo trio returned with S/T, an album of new material released in August via Polyvinyl Records. Rainer Maria are currently on tour with a stop at Rock and Roll Hotel on Thursday, Sept. 28.

Glam Skanks 12
Ali Cat of Glam Skanks lovingly tells a former crush what to do with himself at Baltimore Soundstage on Sept. 19, 2017.

My favorite song by Glam Skanks is one that frontwoman Ali Cat lovingly introduces as a love song. And it certainly starts out as a traditional love song with its throwback ’50s rock ‘n roll vibe and initial cooing.

But before Ali even begins to strut across the stage, the song takes a whimsical turn for the better as she rains scorn down upon her former objet d’affection, proudly proclaiming the title “Fuck Off!” with a storm of hand gestures to emphasize the same.
