Don’t Miss: Aurora @ U Street Music Hall, 4/21/16

Norwegian singer Aurora Aksnes has been taking the US airwaves by storm with the release of her debut full-length album, All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend (released March 11 via Decca Records), and her subsequent television appearances leading up to a North American tour that stops at U Street Music Hall on Thursday, April 21.

To no one’s surprise, our local show has sold out! And those who have tickets will enjoy the 19-year-old Aurora’s lyrically rich art-pop sensibilities. She likes to sing in metaphors relating to battles with songs like “Conquerer” and “Warrior” and often takes a look at the dark side of the human condition with songs like “Running with the Wolves,” a song of escape, and “Murder Song (5,4,3,2,1),” a story of a mercy killing perhaps but ultimately about loss.

Ultimately, where Aurora makes her mark, however, is with her voice, unique in its haunting timber.

Watch the official music video for “Conquerer” by Aurora on YouTube:

Said Aurora in press notes on the song, “I know that I’m very sensitive. In many ways, I’m weak. But if you’re weak, you’re also very strong. Because you need to work a bit harder to survive as well… You have to find the conqueror in yourself at first, I think. That’s what I think about in the song. It’s just a person who hasn’t realized that yet. That person is still trying to find the conqueror in someone else. You have to find the conqueror in yourself to land on your own feet. You are the only one you need to survive. Then other people will make your life a good life as well. It’s important to be strong in yourself.”

Singer/songwriter Tor Miller from New York opens for Aurora. The show is sold out.

Music Park: Joe Satriani @ Lincoln Theatre — 4/2/16

For nearly two hours and 45 minutes, Joe Satriani took the rapt Lincoln Theatre audience on a sonic journey of rock guitar riffs and solo jams that mirrored the theme of his newest album, Shockwave Supernova. He styled the tour as From Surfing to Shockwave.

Joe started nicely with the new album’s self-titled song, which fired the crowd up. Days before, I had caught the Living Colour show at the Howard Theatre and between the two shows, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that many middle-aged men grinning from ear to ear and moving like they could dance. (They can’t. And fine, don’t get me wrong, there were plenty of women and young people too, but they didn’t grin as big…)

Many of his song titles spark the imagination, describing space-age out-of-this world locations and adventures, like “Crystal Planet”, “If I Could Fly” and “Surfing With the Alien”.

Sports Park: DC United vs. Vancouver Whitecaps @ RFK Stadium, 4/9/16

DC United's New LogoSeason Record: 0-2-3 (3 points)

Well, well. Not a prodigious start for DC United. Five games into the 2016 season, and they have zero wins. In 2015 they started strong, with a 3-1-1 (10 points) record after the first five games.

This Saturday they play the Vancouver Whitecaps, who are no slouches, and need a result to start to turn the tide. Vancouver finished in 2nd place in the Western Conference last year and are in 6th place this season with 7 points.

The only offensive bright spot for the United so far is Lamar Neagle’s one goal and one assist. They only have three goals total.

This upcoming game also comes amid some controversy with the supporter groups (DC United recently banned a fan for a year for using smoke during the March 26th game.)

It’s not time to panic, but it is time to rise up and really play some football (or soccer).

Get your tickets here.

Don’t Miss: Bleached @ DC9, 4/13/16

The talented Clavin sisters, Jen and Jessie, once fronted a garage band called Mika Miko in Los Angeles. Despite the band’s popularity, they left it to join bassist Micayla Grace in a new garage project, Bleached.

The resulting punk band borrowed a sneer from Joan Jett and girl band pop vocals from the likes of The Shangri-La’s. Thematically, they deal with bad romance and bad habits. Bleached released a debut album, Ride Your Heart, in 2013, and they now have returned for their sophomore effort, Welcome the Worms, released April 1! The ladies have hit the road on a tour in support of the album, and they stop at DC9 on Wednesday, April 13.

Watch the official music video for “Keep on Keepin’ on,” the lead single from the new album, by Bleached on YouTube:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmgBdqsOwLo]

Said to have recorded the album during difficult personal times, Jen and Jessie poured themselves into it, finding a creative outlet for their tumultuous circumstances and making a helluva record. Of the result, NPR Music said, “Bleached’s furious and fun sound, mixed with a slacker vibe, invites you to enjoy your youthful worries while they last.”

L.A. punk quartet No Parents open for Bleached. Tickets are available online!

Interview: Josh Morgan of The Subways @ Rock and Roll Hotel, 4/12/16

Just hearing the garage punk thumping of “Rock & Roll Queen” by The Subways instantly takes you back 10 years, when the UK trio introduced the earworm to the world.

Now, The Subways are poised to return to the United States on tour for the first time since 2008. Vocalist and guitarist Billy Lunn, vocalist and bassist Charlotte Cooper, and drummer Josh Morgan will kick off a US tour here in DC at the Rock and Roll Hotel on Tuesday, April 12, marking the US release of their fourth album (self-titled) the following Friday via Bodan Kuma Recordings.

By the way, the band launched a campaign on Pledge Music to raise money for their tour. They are offering meet and greets, handwritten music, signed records, signed set lists, signed photos, personalized poems, and even their tour drum kit available for fans to own via pledging their support! For details, visit http://www.thesubways.net. (The band has almost reached their goal, last I checked, and the campaign still has 12 days remaining as of today.)

Sports Park: The One About Nationals’ Bobbleheads

0

Washington Nationals 2016 BobbleheadsGreet your 2016 Bryce Harper (May 11) and Max Scherzer (May 23) Bobbleheads

Baseball player and mascot bobbleheads have really taken off and continue to gain popularity every year. It seems like all the Major League Baseball teams have bobblehead nights.

In St. Louis last year, I watched in fascination as hawkers bartered for and acquired bags full of bobbleheads, to later sell online. It’s become big business for collector’s. (BTW – I kept mine.) I also tried to get a King Felix bobblehead in Seattle, but was shut-down by the insane number of people who came more than two hours early. (BTW – A friend got two (?!?)…and sent one to me in DC. Nice.)

In Marlins Park (Miami), they even have a dedicated Bobblehead Museum with bobbles from all the Major League Baseball teams. I’m sure it has only gotten bigger since I was there four years ago. The Marlins’ website says they currently have over 700!

Why bobbleheads, you ask? What makes them so sought after? Maybe they are the new baseball card. Maybe the world is just crazy. I’ll try to answer this pressing question during the season.

In 2015, your Washington Nationals had five “Great Moments in Nationals History” bobblehead nights.

And in 2016, the Nationals are gearing up for five more bobblehead promotional nights. The first 25,000 fans to these games win the night!

  1. Wednesday, May 11 = Bryce Harper MVP Bobblehead (Pro tip: Your grandkids will want this when Bryce retires in 2033.)
  2. Monday, May 23 = Max Scherzer No-Hitter Bobblehead (Piece #1 of 2) (Pro-tip: Two pieces, this requires synergy and commitment.)
  3. Tuesday, July 19 = Dusty Baker Bobblehead (Pro-tip: This is Dusty’s first year as Manager, let’s welcome him with a bouncing head.)
  4. Friday, August 26 = Max Scherzer No-Hitter Bobblehead (Piece #2 of 2) (Pro-tip: If you didn’t get the first one, better check eBay.)
  5. Friday, September 9 = Nationals Fan Choice Bobblehead (Pro-tip: Fans got to pick which player they want to see immortalized. Stay tuned for the big reveal.)

Of course, the Nationals will have other promotional items for your acquisitional pleasure. Maybe a Bryce Harper Chia Pet? or a Garden Gnome? Yes.

I’d like to go on record in saying, I want to see more Teddy bobbleheads! No April Fooling.

Don’t Miss: Duran Duran @ Verizon Center, 4/8/16

On Nov. 4, 2013, I traveled to New York City to meet and mingle with Duran Duran at an exclusive party, where I was able to chat with my long-time musical heroes prior to a screening at the Museum of Modern Art of their concert film, Duran Duran Unstaged, directed by David Lynch.

After the film, my perpetual concert date and best friend Yasmin and I were able to spend some more time at a question and answer panel with the four main members of the band — vocalist Simon LeBon, synthmaster Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor. It wasn’t the only time Yasmin and I engaged the band, but it was perhaps the most memorable.

Music Park: Junior Boys @ Black Cat — 3/29/16

Jeremy Greenspan sings at the Black Cat on March 29, 2016.

“This place is like a time capsule,” said Jeremy Greenspan between songs at the Black Cat on Tuesday night. “It hasn’t changed in 15 years.”

Jeremy, vocalist and guitarist of Canadian synthpop duo Junior Boys, recalled playing perhaps his second show ever in the United States at the Black Cat soon after it took up residence at its current location in 2001. On Tuesday, Junior Boys appeared again to perform songs from their alluring new album, Big Black Coat, released last month via City Slang to critical acclaim.

If the Cat hasn’t changed much, the music of Junior Boys at least has matured in some interesting ways.

The new album is the first from Junior Boys in five years, and the time off seems to have been really good for them creatively. Jeremy and synthesizer player Matt Didemus enthralled a very full room at the Black Cat with their blend of technopop and R&B, giving the new songs their opportunity to shine alongside established favorites.

Sports Park: Beer Offerings at Nationals Park in 2016

3

Nationals ParkThe new sign on Budweiser Terrace at Nationals Park

The Washington Nationals opened their doors on Tuesday, March 29th for a behind the scenes tour of what’s new and exciting for the 2016 season.

Although there is a lot of good things to cover, now we focus solely on the Nationals Park beer offerings. Because we like beer.

One of the biggest changes for 2016, is the Nationals’ new partnership with Anheuser-Busch, replacing that of Miller.

In addition to more Budweiser beers than you can handle, this will bring changes to many of the areas you have grown to love hanging out in over the years. And it looks like they will be for the better.

All the of the names will be different. As follows:

  • Budweiser Terrace (was the Miller Lite Scoreboard Walk)
  • Swing Big Beer Pen (was the Miller Lite Beer Pen)
  • Bud Light Loft (was the Red Loft)
  • Budweiser Brewhouse (was the Red Porch)
  • Lime-A-Rita Lookout (a new area in the Gallery Level)

FYI – In the Budweiser Terrace, they have also doubled the size of Shake Shack (because you said you didn’t like the long lines – they do listen!).

Beer snobs, don’t fret, there will still be a plethora of local beers found throughout the Park.

I’d love to create a map of where each beer can be found, but let’s take one thing at a time.

Local breweries: From DC: Beers from 3 Stars, DC Brau and Atlas will be on hand. Other local breweries that will have their beers available: Heritage, Mad Fox, Port City and Old Ox.

There will also be a Goose Island Pub and a Shock Top Bar and for those that don’t like change, Miller Lite can still be found in certain kiosks. Stella Artois and Blue Point Toasted Lager will also be on the menu.

Happy Hours: The Nationals will offer a very agreeable Happy Hour option; $5 Budweiser beer (until up to 30 minutes before the first pitch) that will surely compete with the festivities over at the Bullpen.

Tailgating: The white tent near the Home Plate Gate and aptly named, Home Plate Tailgate, will be available for 90 minutes before the first pitch as an all-inclusive group package, that will include games, food, beer and wine, and a game ticket. Minimum of 75 people, for $75 per person.

And on a beer/baseball related note, don’t forget to visit Bluejacket for their Opening Day Fest on April 7th. Read more.
