Aly & AJ brought both nostalgia and future to The Fillmore Silver Spring recently with support from Armors. Anyone who came-of-age in the mid 2000s has probably heard of the duo, consisting of sisters Aly and AJ Michalka. They released their pop-rock debut album Into the Rush in 2005 and Insomniatic in 2007, including the single “Potential Breakup Song.” After a decade-long break, Aly & AJ returned in 2017 with the ’80s infused, indie-pop Ten Years, and released Sanctuary on May 10.

Playing songs from the resulting album Emerald Valley lately, Corin and REM guitarist Peter Buck drew a sizable crowd of the devout and the curious at U Street Music Hall recently.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band. Nils Lofgren has achieved iconic status — and induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — playing with these legendary acts, but as he came out a house of fire on “Walkin’ Nerve,” he left no doubt that he is one hell of a rock star in his own right. The Maryland native made a recent homecoming among family, friends, and a packed house, on the first of two nights at The Birchmere.

A friend’s college-aged son, Patch, asked me a year ago if I had heard of this new band, Greta Van Fleet?

No, I hadn’t, and who where they? He pulled up their video on his phone and showed me. I proceeded to watch in amazement as these young kids performed their music. I was equally as amazed when I saw them headline the DC101 Kerfuffle at Merriweather Post Pavilion recently.
